Saya rasa Pak Lah patut adakan Suruhanjaya Bebas (Suruh Orang Lain Jayakan). Sikit sikit Suruhanjaya Bebas. Apa lah, pemimpin tak berani buat keputusan. Memerintah negara takut buat keputusan. Kalau tak berani buat keputusan jangan jadi pemimpin. Dah lah ekonomi menguncup, harga naik, private sector merungut kerana kurang bisnes. Belanjawan negara macam mak kita dulu-dulu; Ayah bagi seringgit, belanja 50sen simpan 50sen. Macam mana kita nak maju. It is one thing to feel justified in defending the position for the freedom of the press, it is however, something else altogether when the editorial decides to offer an apology which is obviously not heart felt.

Let me be more specific. For example, the reason why some readers have taken offence at the cartoon stems not from the fact that it was one of the Danish caricatures which has caused outrage amongst Muslims around the globe, but rather, because it was done in the context of an already delicate situation involving large numbers of Muslims. As I am sure the editors of the NST is already aware, context is equally important, and as such should have been more responsible towards their readers. To suggest, further on, that they have received letters which “could not see what the fuss was all about” illustrates the point clearly. After all, there were also European Muslims who wrote to their respective papers suggesting that the Danish caricatures were taken too seriously, but this does not excuse the fact that it was offensive to a large number of Muslims worldwide.

It saddens me when the NST states that, “Perhaps, in more ordinary circumstances, such a cartoon would not have received more than a passing mention”. What does this mean? Is it to suggest that if the said cartoon was not publicly acknowledged, then it would have been acceptable? Religious sensitivities are not easily defined, and one would have hoped that the editors would have cognizant of such sensibilities. For a newspaper that claims to espouse the cardinal principles on which the nation is built, surely the potentially offensive nature of the cartoon, its timing and content, would have been recognized earlier.

Also the paragraph which states “In the case of the Wiley Miller comic strip, the sub-editor in charge let through the cartoon because it bore no caricature nor words offensive to Islam… Unfortunately, one blog and some media, including Zainnudin’s RTM (I thought RTM belonged to the Government?) highlighted the cartoon and came to the verdict that the NST had mocked the prophet and Islam. From then on the issue took a life of its own” brooks several questions – first, how does one console an ‘unreserved apology’ when the tone of the article suggest that decision as to what would or would not be offensive to Muslims be the province of the NST? Surely in the given context, when large sections of Muslims in Malaysia still feel a sense of grave injustice over the events of the past few months? The sub- editor in charge may have made an honest mistake in assuming that the cartoons would not prove offensive but it does not mean that the individual or individuals involved should not bear the brunt of responsibility. Who is he to decide what should or should not be offensive to large numbers of Muslims? That the editors of the NST would require a blog to remind them of their social responsibilities? One would have thought such experienced leaders of the media would have greater social and political acumen than that. And to suggest that if these cartoons were not highlighted by ‘some portions of the media’ then it, perhaps, would not have created the current controversy, is arrogant and misses the point completely. An ‘unreserved apology’ means to feel a genuine conviction that what one has done is wrong. To suggest, however slight, that maybe, if certain other groups had not taken it up, then no real offense is taken, is at best a poor attempt at disavowing responsibility shows no real sign of guilt. And, its true, there was no caricature of the Prophet in the cartoon, but could it be construed as ‘mocking’? Well, certainly quite a number of Muslims seem to think so, and that possibility itself should have been considered by the NST. Lastly, if the editors of the NST genuinely believe that those who are responsible must be accountable, then perhaps those in the higher echelons of the papers should consider the possibility of resigning.

Yours truly,
They got nothing to do with the issue. Nak jadi pemimpin mestilah berani berhujah. Kita harap kedua-dua mereka sanggup menghadapi Datuk Kadir di mana-mana saja. Datuk carilah partner Datuk. Apa kata Datuk?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
