SELEPAS 60 tahun, penulis C.H.E.

Make Their Own Freedom” (Wanita Melayu Mencipta Kebebasan Sendiri).

HARTA INTELEK

Oleh C.H.E. Det

Bomoh Melayu mengenakan "pengeras" apabila mengubat pesakit.

  1. The answer to our students' reluctance to come back is simple: There is only "fake" meritocracy here. Brains are not valued here.

Still don't believe? Take a look at the quality of lectures in our public universities.

Where are all the better lecturers you ask? They left.

Why? Most of them will say "Cuz Msia practices everything else BUT true meritocracy.

So cry as loud as you want now. But that's how shortsighted you were.

  6. Assalammualaikum Dato,

Berita baik, alhamdulillah Tun kembali aktif menulis. Sentiasa kritikal & against the grain.

I agree with koolgeek, our problems did not just surface overnight, nor did it take 1 ruling party to implement after the past elections. what we have, what we see everyday, has been going on since forever. Yes, while you too fall into this category of ill gotten management, and while you too tried to put Malaysia on your shoulders while fighting of the tigers, it didn't work as well as you hoped. Everything you say now, you could have done something about then. That is the truth. How many assemblies did you attend contain racial connotations. The problem has always been the same. Money. The ones with power demand continuous support, and the ones that deserve are left in the dust.Always thinking, the next time i will do something abt it. Well, it's too late now. All your reform wont change a thing, and all your cries for change will be silenced by those that fear change. Let's have an Indian deupty prime minister and a Chinese Prime Minister for one season. and then vice versa. And see what happens. The people now know how to shout. And we're shouting because Malays have a protective field around them. And for what? Look at all the "aristocratic" Malays, look at all the girls in their g-strings and tank tops. the only thing that comes to mind is this. Name sahaja Islam. as my best friend (a Malay) once said. Stop taking the easy way out.

    Salaam, Dato'

Perhaps C.H.E. Det would like to exercise his formidable intellect on the subject of foreign direct investment (FDI).

In 2005, Malaysia attracted US$3.96 billion in FDI. In 2006, the figure was US$6.04 billion. An increase of 52.4%.

In 2005, Singapore attracted US$15 billion in FDI. In 2006, the figure was US$24.2 billion. An increase of 61.3%.

(Source: IMF, national and regional balance of payments statistics, Eurostat and other sources). See report in the Spore Business Times (http://business-times.asia1.com.sg), Aug 14.

The question to C.H.E. Det: why is it that Spore can attract 4 times the FDI compared to Malaysia?

And if he can come up with a convincing answer, I would be willing to consider his other arguments. If not, then he is just another voice crying in the wilderness.

Thank you for the piece on Che Det's comeback. I am going to get a copy of the Era Baru, for sure. Have a copy of the his early writings as a columnist. One piece that I remember well is his take on the "Ronggeng", which is an exotic dance that has its roots in Indonesia. In the article Che Det writes about paying money to dance with ronggeng ladies at dance halls and concludes that Ronggeng will never die and that it will be part of the Malay culture. Well, Che Det was wrong! I guess I remember that article because it was so difficult to pin Dr Mahathir for a misplaced conviction!

But then, I thought again, the dang-dut came and conquered the Melayu world, so much so that dang-dut joints mushroomed in the heart of the KL city. That, I realised then, was another form of ronggeng.

Che Det was right, after all. Darn!

(I write this comment without referring to the article so some points may not be accurate).

    Tuan-tuan,

    Tepuk dada tanyalah memori ;)

harta intelek (IP) melindungi setiap rakyat Malaysia? Hak cipta rakyat Malaysia dipegang kerajaan. Siapa nak, bayar royalti.

Kajian ini mengambil kira perkara: 1.access to education, 2.health, 3.poverty

Nampaknya negara kita mendahului berbanding negara maju lain.

  15. Dear All:

C.H.E. Det makes an intriguing point in comparing intellectuals and intellectual property rights. Before commenting specifically on the issue, let me dispose one unrelated technical point.

This "Era Baru" is not exactly the local version of "The Economist," meaning it has limited circulation in the equally limiting world of written works in Malay. If as I presume C.H.E. Det writes not with the idea of collecting royalty (I am sure he is not even paid for the piece, or if he is, the payment would be peanuts especially by C.H.E. Det’s standards) but for the dissemination of his ideas (the purpose of every writer), then this "Era Baru" outlet is a poor choice. Without intending to slight Era Baru’s editors, C.H.E. Det would probably get more readers through this blog.

So I join others in suggesting that C.H.E. Det has its own blog. I do warn him however that he would have formidable competition. One crops up immediately: “RantingsbyMM!”

Alternatively, other blogs and Internet portals (in particular the wildly popular Malaysia-Today.net) would follow the example of The Scribe and re-post C.H.E. Det’s piece in its entirety. I am of course banking on C.H.E. Det being not too fussy about such matters as copyright.

Now to the issue at hand:

Contrary to C.H.E. Det’s assertion, Third World countries like Malaysia CAN afford to pay globally competitive salaries to their talented citizens. In fact I would argue otherwise; these countries cannot afford NOT to pay them competitive salaries (pardon the double negatives). This does not mean these countries should match exactly what the First World is offering. After all a US $100,000 annual pay would get you a luxurious bungalow in Malaysia but only a modest condo if at all in America. There is the matter of what economists call comparative purchasing power. Besides, whatever generous pay the local talent would be getting, the country would recoup most of it back through taxes and other local expenditures.

Again contrary to C.H.E. Det’s claim, Third World countries are already paying First World remunerations; it is just that they are rewarding the wrong talents. Consider Malaysia with its Mat Deroses and Kalimullah Hassans. In America the Mat Deroses would at best be paid as a janitor to cleanup those mansions, while Kalimullah would be lucky to get his “Letter to the Editor” published in the free local neighborhood tabloid.

As for the First World paying Third World countries compensation for “robbing” their talent, the realities are these. Countries like UK and US, not Third World countries, are investing heavily in these talents. The contributions of Third World countries are only for schooling and perhaps undergraduate education, which are very cheap compared to graduate and professional training.

Take the only two Muslim Nobel Prize winners in science: Abdus Salam and Ahmed Zewail. They did their doctoral work in UK and US respectively. These two countries willingly invested in the intellectual development of the two. If they had stayed back in their native countries, they would have become tyrannical lecturers or petty civil servants, at best. At worse they could be jailed or killed. Third World countries do not treat inquisitive minds kindly!

Look at how Egypt treated its Nobel laureate in literature, Naguib Mahfouz, beaten physically with the acquiescence of the authorities. As for Abdus Salam, the Pakistan Parliament stripped him of his citizenship after labeling him kafir!

Lastly, intellectuals cannot be treated in the same manner as intellectual property rights for another more fundamentally important reason. They are first and foremost human beings, not properties of the state or race. Their talent is the gift of Allah. While that special gift is conferred only on selected lucky individuals chosen by Him, and only by Him, Allah in His wisdom has given us all humans an even more valuable gift: the gift of freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Freedom and the pursuit of happiness are not concepts invented by Western philosophers; such fundamental rights are stated in many places in our Holy Quran. No one can temper with what God has ordered.

  16. Frankly I was not surprised that the first comments to something like students not wanting to return home would come from the likes of people who are quick to blame everything from acid rain to soggy french fries on Malays.

NEP horror stories? Try being a Malay working in a foreign multinational in the late 70's. I was labeled a "quota filler" when I was more qualified than most of the Cool Chinese and Indian Geeks who were recruited with me.

Good lecturers? In those days Chinese and Indian lecturers gave extra classes under the guise of Christian fellowship and prayer meetings.

In those days bright Malay students from schools like the MCKK, RMC, STAR, SDAR, TKC, Sekolah Tun Fatimah, etc. cannot make it past the 1st year of Medicine and Engineering courses in UM but excel when sent overseas.

Can we have an Indian or a Chinese Prime Minister? YES! Why not? WE are a democracy and that means it must be someone who has the support of the majority. It's as simple as that. Would I put my trust in an Indian or Chinese PM? I would but not in this present crop of clowns.

I has always held this belief that the reason we cannot solve longstanding issues is because we factor in race as the main reason. Take one of the comments. His last sentence was "So cry as loud as you want now, But that's how shortsighted you were". You? Meaning Malays? Why not WE? Meaning Malaysians. Are all our problems because of us dumb and lazy Malays?

People not wanting to come back is for one main reason, GREED. Do you think any of these people would admit to being greedy by saying "I left because of the money not because I cannot become the Dean of the Medical faculty"? Of course there are those that leave because they felt mistreated. They made their choice. Good luck to them.

Must the best administrators and lecturers and whatnots be only Indians, Chinese and others?

Agreed with Akma,

    Koolgeek, Naveen,

You want equal rights and yet you cant even speak or actually refuse to speak/learn the national language to save your life?

You should be greatful we are not like Thailand or Indonesia where you have to change your name and speak their language.

But look at them - you can't even differentiate one from another.

So tell me - what gives?

Start acting like a malaysian - then we can talk about equal rights or else - like hell the malays are going to give in.

Look at UK's immigration policy and ask the local brit on how they detest immigrants who can't and refuse to learn english- so are the malays as racist as the british?

  19. The merger of Kumpulan Guthrie Berhad, Golden Hope Berhad and Sime Darby into a single company (Synergy Drive Sdn Bhd), will certainly be one of the ruling Government’s biggest mistakes. And the Barisan Nasional will pay heavily for this in the next general election.

Merging three multinational companies, all of which growing rapidly in terms of size and profitability on their own accord, into a single entity does not make any economic sense. Bumiputeras will be the end-losers. So much for Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s ambitious idea to create “towering personalities” among Bumiputera corporate leaders. By merging the three companies, there will only be one Bumiputera CEO. The other two, although maintained by the merged entity, will become toothless. Their capability as leaders, gone to waste.

Scores of Bumiputeras in the three companies who were top ranking staff in their respective companies before the merger, will be sidelined post-merger. Some of them have no positions.

It is more and more evident now that our present Government is a Government of contradictions. While it says that it wants to increase Bumiputera equity from the current 18 per cent to 35 per cent as stated in the New Economic Policy, its actions suggest that it is doing the opposite – reduce Bumiputera participation in the country's economy.

The Government's decision to allow the merger is mind-boggling as all three companies are making profits. These profits are used to pay dividends to Bumiputeras who purchase unit trusts issued by PNB through Amanah Saham Nasional, Amanah Saham Bumiputera etc.

If these companies are running at a loss, then a merger would seem logical. But they are making profits and they pay high dividends to their shareholders including PNB (read: The Government and Bumiputeras).

PNB should also not stray from its original objective which is to narrow the economic disparity between the Bumiputeras and non-Bumiputeras. The impending merger has already caused casualties among the Bumiputera professionals. High-ranking Bumiputeras in the three target companies have lost their positions to non-Bumiputeras.

Merging the three companies into a single entity promises nothing. It will be a messy affair. At the moment, these companies, maybe with the exception of Sime Darby, are focused on their core competencies. Golden Hope is a fully integrated plantation company while Guthrie concentrates on plantations and property.

Merging them into a conglomerate is akin to the age-old saying of putting all the eggs in a single basket. When the basket falls, the eggs will break. You will be left with empty shells.

The merged entity will be a mess. It will be running all sorts of businesses ranging from hospitals to tyre production to sales of heavy equipment. Perhaps, Abdullah needs to be told that conglomerates are out of fashion. Companies now focus on their core competencies.

Equally mysterious is the Securities Commission’s approval of the impending merger. How can it allow PNB to vote in the forthcoming Extraordinary General Meetings of the three companies? PNB holds substantial shares in the three companies. By virtue of being a shareholder, it is an interested party. So how can the merger be considered as non-related party transaction whereby PNB can cast its votes?

Like the Government, PNB should also be held responsible if the merger fails. PNB should never have accepted the merger proposal. Its chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid and President Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah shoulder the responsibility of ensuring that Bumiputeras enjoy good returns from their investment. Operating as separate entities, Guthrie, Golden Hope and Sime Darby have been able to give good returns. But will Synergy Drive be able to do the same. If Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji and Tan Sri Hamad fail to deliver it will not only be a dereliction of duty on their part, but It will also be their biggest sin to the country’s Bumiputeras, a majority of them being Muslims.

The argument that the merger is necessary to ward off stiff competition from other large companies, does not hold water. As a merged entity, Synergy Drive will only produce 8 per cent of the world’s palm oil. No big deal. In just a matter of a year, an Indonesian conglomerate will become the biggest oil palm plantation company in the world. Indonesian companies can afford to do so because they have all the land they need for future expansion. Synergy Drive’s expansion plans, on the other hand, will be at the mercy of the Indonesian Government.

Synergy Drive’s calculation of future profits are based on current palm oil prices which have reached an unprecedented high. If the price of palm oil plunges, the outcome will be disastrous. And who will suffer? Well, Bumiputeras obviously.

The question that the Government and PNB should ask themselves is: In the first year, can Synergy Drive make as much as the three companies have made in combined profits over the last financial year?

If it can’t, then why bother?

Given the above reasons, it is mind-boggling that the Government could give its approval for the merger. Apparently, the same proposal was submitted to the then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad several years ago. He shot it down immediately for reasons that it will be detrimental to Bumiputera equity holding.

In any case, we know that at least one party will be richer by at least RM3 billion – Nazir Abdul Razak, the younger brother of Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, whose CIMB is the merchant bank for the entire deal.

One wonders whether that is the whole idea behind the merger exercise.

Let's have an Indian deupty prime minister and a Chinese Prime Minister for one season. and then vice versa. And see what happens.

Such arrogance. One season? Satu penggal le kot. You do mean one term don't you naveen?

That's how good a Chinese or an Indian Prime Minister would be? Pray tell me who among the present Chinese and Indian politicians fits the bill?

Pray tell me who among the present Chinese and Indian politicians is not as corrupt as the present crop of Malay politicians.

Thailand had its 1st ethnic Chinese PM and look what happened.

Scenarios like this reminds me of a Malaysian Chinese author who wrote a book in the early 80's about how lazy the Malays were/are. The book was a bestseller in Australia and a reporter picked a passage that said Malays are so lazy that they would rather wait for coconuts to fall from the trees instead of doing something to get them.

Even my mother can tell you that the best coconuts to make rendang with are those that fall when they ripen.

Another common complain is that the Chinese work hard to power the economy and pay taxes but are treated like 2nd class citizens.

I would agree to the Chinese being responsible for the supply side of the economy but without the Malays spending and borrowing to spend, who buys what's produced.

In the early days of ASB, the Malays were urged to save so that we can acquire the 30%. Now we hardly hear the government asking us to save. Could it be because if the Malays too start saving as much of their income as the Chinese, the demand side of the economy would be affected?

Chinese pay more tax? Maybe but then many successful Chinese businesses declare losses. Many Malays makan gaji and get their taxes deducted at source.

Seriously, when the British let us go (I do not subscribe to independence because technically we were not conquered but we had to submit because 2 Chinese gangster groups created a war that gave the British the excuse to come in and suppressed us with the Sepoys from India), nobody gave us a chance because of the multi everything that we were.

They expected us to be worse than India and Pakistan but contrary to popular belief, we prospered. The Malays was, and still is, the majority race. As my late grandfather told me once, it is because we did not abuse our majority.

Truth is after 50 years Malaysia is just like me (I am 51 this year). While I like some of the things I have achieved, there are many that I wish to improve and even change.

We have Malaysian problems. Let us solve them as Malaysians. I get put off when problems and issues are given narrow racist definitions.

Please accept my apologies if I have offended anyone with my comments. I wrote with no malice intended.

Agreed with M Bakri Musa's comments. Tun should have published his thoughts through his blog rather than this Era Baru.

  25. The suggestion that developed countries pay a royalty for taking away professionals trained at a high cost by a developing country is superb. But the professionals were lured through the open labour market with very high income, which their own country can't afford to pay.THEY choose to go for a higher income and a better opportunity to gain international experience.

Is it fair to stop them? Or block their going away by
forcing the prospective employer oversea to pay a royalty?

Saya tetap membacanya. Namun ada kalanya saya tidak akan menyirakannya.

Kedua, apabila mengemukan perangkaan, cukup bagus kalau dinyatakan sumbernya.

    Terima kasih.

    Salam Datuk

Sorry for going out of topic.

This is what you said in Rocky's blog:

    Sdr Rocky's Bru,

If I remember correctly, Amir stop voluntarily in 1999. He stopped after we edited one of his articles. We edited and published that controversial article with his knowledge.

As a rule, we (Boon, Pak Non, Ahmad A Talib and I) would inform regular contributors if we had to edit their articles.

Most had no problem with us editing but others were not so pleased. A few opted to stop writing.

During my time, we had not only Amir. We had Mazlan Nordin, Karim Raslan, Askiah Adam, Farish A Noor, Salleh Ben Joned and several others writing for us.

Askiah's 1999 article criticising the Umno no-contest decision landade me in a huge trouble. In a way it was the beginning of an end for me. I stood by her article.

    Thank you.

I am amused by your comments about standing by your writers during your time and it landed you in trouble. How about what you did to the former deputy premier anwar ibrahim. your continued works to embarrased him day in and out thru the newspaper you headed at that time is the worst ever by an editor in the history of Malaysian journalism. It situation was so clear between right and wrong...just like between white and black...HAVE YOU NO SHAMe...now you are kicked out ..you seems to keen to comment on writing and standing by people >>POOODAH.

    Y.Bhg Datuk,

Communication barrier is a promoting factor to paranoia and prejudism..

Vorsicht! Mull..Gehirn Beleidigung.. (:P a few Deutch words i've learned..)

Thank you for intelligent writing. I am humbled and happy that you clearly showed me the error of my ways. It is true, I have perspective is narrowed to such racial bias and animosity. But please understand, it is because I have been at the receiving all my life.

This is my country too and a country I'd willingly do anything for.
