Wither The True Bangsa Malaysia

A Kadir Jasin

IN A MALAYSIA that is becoming more racially polarised and economically dichotomised, the passing of my Chinaman friend, Yap Keng Hock, on Aug. 14 was a sad moment.

We, his Melayu friends, called him China Yap and he loved every bit of it. We could very well be the last Malaysians who could call each other by our “bangsa” and not a bit offended by it.

But in public we would refrain from calling out to each other by our bangsa - Melayu and China - for fear that we might offense the sensibilities of the new Malaysian generation who are not used to the kind of camaraderie that once defined our multiracial and cross cultural relationship.

Our group comprised the late Captain Mahyuddin Ahmad of Kulim, Kedah; Yap; the executive director of Media Prima Berhad, Ahmad A Talib and yours truly.

Mahyuddin and Yap collaborated in business. When Mahyuddin was a manager at Marco Shoes in Klang, Yap supplied moulds and dyes for Nike shoes that the company was then manufacturing under license.

[The photograph above was taken in 2002 showed Yap (extreme left) with Mohd Desa Omar, VS Ganesan, Myself, VM Muru, Azmi Bahari and Solehan Haji Badri at a Hari Raya open house.]

Yap learned mould and dye making in Japan when he was sent there by his early employer, Matsushita.

Mahyuddin went on to set up a mill in Kulim to produce castrating rings for animal husbandry. Mahyuddin’s business was inherited by his children and all of Yap’s four children are working in the family business together with Yap’s younger brother, Gary.

When I was introduced to Yap in the late 1970’s, he was running a makeshift foundry in Klang. I noted in my report in the Business Times newspaper that his foundry looked more like a pigsty than a factory.

He enjoyed every bit of the report and told me later that even American bankers found his story inspiring. When the factory caught fire and was totally destroyed, he built a better one.

Yap was indeed a kampung boy who made good thanks to his Malay and English education, and the fact that he was born and raised in a mixed rural town in Negeri Sembilan.

Today, there aren’t that many Malays like Mahyuddin and Chinese like Yap, who attended bilingual multi-ethnic schools where the command of the Malay and English languages built bridges and tore down communal fences.

Sadly today, the Malays and other Bumiputeras attend national schools, the Chinese go to Chinese type national schools and Tamil-speaking Indians go to Tamil type national schools.

They all call themselves national, but they are separated by geography, language, culture and quality of education. To add to the confusion we also have private and international schools where the better-off parents are free to send their children.

Little surprise that when products of this fractured school system meet each other in later life, they are already influenced by deep racial, religious and cultural biases that makes the fostering of a true bangsa Malaysia nearly impossible.

As I grow older and many of good friends of those unprejudiced times are either dead or struck down by age-related illnesses, I look back at the past with a mixture of satisfaction and nostalgia that we were once true Malayans (and later Malaysians). Wallahualam.

KERANA, kononnya menghormati HAK ASASI mereka.

HAKIKATNYA, tiada keberanian kerana takut UNDI MELAYANG!!!

PADA HARI INI, saya amat yakin belum ada mana-mana pemimpin politik BERANI menyuarakan pendapat KETIDAKPERLUNYA sekolah jenis kebanggsaan Cina /India.

    NAJIB, tak berani.
    ANWAR,tak berani.

    SIAPA YANG BERANI DATO'???

  3. And now we have DAPs and the likes of Dong Ziong fanning racial hatred against the Malays. Perkasa became a product of Chinese hatred against the Malays when government isn't responding swiftly against these perpetrators.

In Singapore, or the olden days of Malaysia, people like Lim Kit Siang and his son would've been shot dead by special branch or at very least, put away in Kamunting.

Elsewhere, a simple tweet describing a particular race in a bad light would've caused somebody behind bars.

  5. Bangsa Malaysia left the building when Bumiputra and NEP was introduced.

Because Ali, Ah Chong and Ramasamy no longer share the same set of challenges.

No longer a level playing field.
Ali get 8% discount for the same house Ah Chong and ramasamy wants to buy.
Ali gets to invest in ASB where the returns are higher.

Ali's children get an easier path for scholarship.

Ali no longer eats in Ah Chong's and Ramasamy houses coz it not halal anymore .

The `era of tribalism' kat malaysia
mai balik dah....`' tukang kipas' dan batu api dari atas sampai bawah, semua `tribes' sekali...

Apa susah, benua afrika punya tribalism dah lama dah,tak pi kemana pun depa...kalu satu malaysia nak joint depa apa salahnya tak?, lagi pun tak ramai pun dalam 30 juta orang saja, bagi 3 thailand, bagi empat vietnam, bagi lapan indonesia saja...

Lagi pun kalu negara maju sangat
pun tak baguih jugak tak ? apa nak gebang lagi kalu semua dah maju....

Elok juga buat referendum nak tribalism ka tak nak, kalu nak tribalism,pi terus kut tu, kalau mampuih, mampuih pi laa, kan tu demokrasi, tak gitu?

Tu la ada pendapat kata demokrasi
is not easily applicable in a heterogenous society..ada kebenerannya.

Lagi pun Dato, history is always

Insultingly for the BN that after 55 years in goverment the BN has produced a 'fractured school system influenced by deep racial, religious and cultural biases that makes the fostering of a true bangsa Malaysia nearly impossible'.

    There three kinds of Malaysians:
    Muslims, Munafiks and Kuffars.

Whither the true Malaysian Muslims, o Mahaguru?

    Dato.

    Perpaduan dan penyatuan rakyat

Pemimpin pemimpin barangkali mereka pun kurang sedar.

Kehancuran sesama sendiri adan sesama rakyat amat bahaya sekali.

Pemimpin kita semua aliran kena tunjuk model terbaik dulu.

    Terima kasih.

Adakah sebegitu?

    Y.Bhg Dato',

I think the national unity will only remain a dream so long the existing economic system in the country is still based on a minority ethnic group dominates a large part of the economy.

    2. Generally, this is something not acceptable anywhere in the world where a minority group owns or controls almost two-thirds of the nation's wealth.

    3. I have the opinion disputes about the education system is something trivial so long as the economic system is not corrected. It will be self corrected when the fairness in the economic system is established.

4.Bumiputra as the majority should be given the right to control the wealth of the country as a first step towards national unity.

5.Tun Razak took the correct action when the new economic policy was launched after the incident of May, 13. However, it is really sad because the Malays are not fully united to ensure the achievement of the policy. Rightly, differences of political affiliation should not give room for any party to criticize the new economic policy.

6.After more than 50 years of Merdeka, the minority group still in control of the whole chain of economic activities from production, value-added activities, financing, marketing and retailing. At one time Prof Aziz Ungku used the term “monopoly and monopsony system” to reflect the role of the intermediary in an economic system dominated by this group especially in rural economy.

7.Let us ask ourselves as Malays what percentage of our overall expenses spent in stores owned by the Malays.

8.After the launching of the DEB, various programs have been implemented but failed to break the chain of economic activities dominated the Chinese.

9.The question is how to achieve national integration in situations where an uneven field for competition between the races in this country. In reality, there are hatred feelings among the Malays against the Chinese mainly because of the unfairness in the economic system though these feelings are not shown publicly.

  15. I've a friend who's very dear to us in our sports team in UM. We call him Keong Anak Cina. He's not the least offended. But of course this is an 'inside thing' what we dare not do in the presence of other people. Perhaps this is part of the problem Dato', that when we refrain from showing our 'selamba'ness, we discourage others from being selamba. Maybe I'm wrong..

And bodoh pandai, I don't really believe it's because of the NEP like you said. You see, I'm only 32. I believe that if you keep on thinking like this we can never find a solution to this dilemma.

Sekarang bangsa Melayu kena gelak.

Item 7. saya setuju sangat kita kena check kedai siapa kita berbelanja.

    Aman makmur bahagia
    Malaysia abadi selamanya
    Berjaya dan berjaya
    Berbagai kaum telah berikrar
    Menjungjung cita cita
    Satu bangsa satu bahasa
    Malaysia berjaya.

Kita boleh hidup berjiran tanpa ada rasa was was.

    Saudara SmartTinta,

I would like to thank you for responding to my comment. Discussing the leakages of DEB in Perhimpunan Agung UMNO is an example of the stupidity of Malays in politics especially in a multiracial country like Malaysia.

    2. NEP as the basic policy to benefit the Malays should not be used as a joking materials or discussed in an open forum. The subject must be placed at the highest level and respected as how we uphold the Perlembagaan Negara.

    3. The policy to restructure society and to eradicate poverty should be maintained as long the imbalances in economy system among the races still exist.

    4. To me, restructuring society means an equitable distribution of wealth among the races and there should not be any minority group controlling everything in our economy. It may take a few decades to achieve but the Malays must be given a clear direction in achieving that vision.

    iklas,

    Rahim

  20. Rahim, Naj and all,

    1. Those who opposed and chided the DEB are people who want to see the poor remaining poor and the rich getting richer. Their mantras are meritocracy and free market.

    2. They are also against the eradication of poverty irrespective of race and oppose the restructuring of society so that Malays are not forever identified with the rural economy and Indians with the estates.

    3. The NEP opponents are generally well-educated and well to do. But they are also individualistic and selfish.

    4. In my recent trip home to my village, the roti canai maker, Nashar Abas Ibrahim, told me that "Cina Panjang" owns much of the Pekan Tanah Merah. We knew Nashar's father as Keling Ibrahim. Then we called all Indians "Keling" -- from the world Kalinga which was an ancient Hindu Empire in India. Ibrahim was in fact a Pathan.

    5. Very people know "Cina Panjang's" real name. All that they know is buying from him and selling to him. They even borrow money from him. NEP or no NEP he continues to prosper. His real name is Tay Ng Hong.

    6. During the May 13 1969 riot, the former Malay Home Guard members - my late father included - formed a team armed with shotguns to protect their Chinese neighbours from possible attack by hotheads.

    7. In 1969, for every 10 cars and shop houses burnt down in Kuala Lumpur, eight or more belonged to the Chinese. Today more Malays have cars and houses in Kuala Lumpur. Maybe that's why a repeat of May 13 is less likely.

    8. As much as I defended the ISA, I also defended the NEP. NEP and ISA contributed to what has become of us today - largely peaceful and fairly well-off.

    Thank you

I strongly belief 1 Malaysia will never be achieve .
I strongly believe that racial politic in Malaysia will never come to the end.
I strongly believe interracial relations will be more a part .

There no way that you being raise and develop differently can come together at the latter age.
The answer is Malaysia must make a brave move to one school system ,it's better late then never .

  22. Sdr Tebing Tinggi,

    Salam Dato’ Kadir,

Please allow me to share a bit of my life story…

I once had a conversation with a non-malay lecturer friend from one of the IPTA. Our views differed on a single school system. And I wonder how many scholars are against it? Is the threat of losing cultural identities stopping such move of setting up a single school system? Maybe… I don’t know.

I was brought up in an environment that taught me to respect people regardless of color or creed. I thanked my father and my late mother for their initiatives to bring up my siblings and me this way. When talked about different races, I will always have fond memories of the people who came into our lives as we grew up.

Our family once employed an Indian maid to look after us when my father was posted in Kedah. My father was a planter with one of the British company before Malaysia started to nationalise foreign owned companies here. We are so fond with our maid, whom we called ‘Kak Ramu’. We treated her as our elder sister and she treated us as her younger siblings. She was part of our family. I still missed her.

Earlier in our lives, my father was once posted somewhere in Melaka. My late mother, my elder sister and my younger brother tagged along. It is in Melaka that my mother somehow befriended a Chinese couple with a little baby girl. They would visit my late mother and have tea. One day, our family decided to adopt this baby. What I learned was that, this couple already had other children to take care and they were having a hard time to cope financially. And this is how we have a new addition to our family.

When my mother passed away, my father re-married and I have new family members. Two lovely little sisters, they are half Siamese and half Malay. Our family is a little bit ‘rojak’. As we grew up, there were the Mat Salleh, Melayu, Cina, India and others that crossed our path…

Sorry if I bored many of you with my life’s story. It is just that, the transition from the past into the present time makes me a little bit sad. One race looks down upon another race. Stereotyping is rampant and fingers point in all directions. This is us. This is the reality now.

A single school may help to foster unity. But a home is where everything begins. The education that we receive from home is priceless. It is the first mould we go through before we passed through other moulds that will eventually shaped us into a human being.

Just pandangan sekupang dua dari saya..

Doa dekatkan yang elok dan baik, jauhkan yang tak elok dan tak baik ... leave the world dalam baik and enter the next world dalam baik ... InsyaAllah ...

    Dato.

Kumpula minoriti naik tocang.

Cerdik pandai dalam majoriti pun tak bersatu.
    Ulamak pun tak bersatu.
    Puak jahil pun serupa.

Masing-masing tegak benang basah sendiri punya.

    Askum Bro,

Your downright comments is so true as I also find that true political friends are not many today, even if we have known them for a few decades. I also have a share of my personal experience with these political opportunists, whereby they will need your help when they want a favour. Once they get what they want, they will walk straight without even looking into your eyes or say hello to you.

Now after 60 years of living a fruitful life, I must admit that my best of friends are not politicians but the ordinary and none of the performing professionals that will appreciate our golden years. These are my long time classmates and school mates from the 50s, 60s, 70s who are still around to share their moments with us down the memory lane.

Sometimes, I am quite disappointed with my senior political friends and wish that they do not behave as if the whole nation and country will collapse without them in power. For that, I still salute Tun Dr. Mahathir and Pak Lah for their modesty and humility as we can still respect each other as friends of the 60s until today.

    Assalamualaikum,
    Sdr Rawa Lanun-Bahasa

    Sigmund Freud, whose name is

He deemed them notable for revealing an unconscious thought, belief, wish, or motive. "Almost invariably I discover a disturbing influence from something outside of the intended speech," he wrote. "The disturbing element is a single unconscious thought, which comes to light through the special blunder."

  42. we went to the malay school and later after an examination of sorts were transferred to the Special Malay Class. In the Malay school we were thought how to read and write jawi and until today my jawi writing and raeding is as good as if not better. We had sekolah ugama. At the SMC we were mixed with Indian, Chinese and Baii boys who are still our friends. We could interact and mix freely. In the University unfortunately I was sharing a room with a Kelatan boy..who despised anything non Malay or non Islam until i found him too much that I asked to be moved out from the room and instead I shared with a Chinese Science student from Kedah Teoh
Today the Ktan guy is active in PAS and his feelings for the non malays and non Muslims is as thick as before.I often wonder why they are with The Pakatan politically??
