After 47 Years I’m A Social Media Journalist

A Kadir Jasin

An old picture of An Emperor and the old time journalists

AS an ageing journalist with no claim to any prominent appointment or media organisation, I stand no chance of being invited to participate in any meaningful programme.

Although I continue to write actively after leaving the New Straits Times Press in 2000, my station in the media is inferior to those of big time editors-in-chief and news controllers of the mainstream media.

Since that date, I have become insignificant enough for media handlers to conveniently ignore my pleas to be invited to attend some of the Prime Minister’s more significant briefings.

Even the supposedly influential media adviser to the Prime Minister, (Tan Sri) Jalaluddin Bahaudin, had not been able to get me an appointment to see the Prime Minister, (Datuk Seri I Mappadulung Daeng Mattimung Karaeng Sandrobone Sultan Abdul Jalil) Mohd Najib Abdul Razak. He had since left the PMO.

Over time, parallel to my growing disenchantment with the government, even press and political secretaries, some of whom were my subordinates in the NSTP, ceased to entertain my queries. My SMS and WhatsApp messages went unanswered.

There are also government agencies that do not want to have anything to do with me because I ask politically incorrect questions like is it true that a certain Malaysian Tamil Tan Sri was given a loan of RM400 million by a government-owned financial institution and an honorary Indonesian Tan Sri received a half billion ringgit in government advance to build a hotel.

There is, however, an advantage of being a pariah. You are free to write whatever you want because nobody pleads with you on what to write and not to write. No “wahyu” from the gods of Putrajaya.

Being an outcast, no government- and party-linked newspaper dares to offer you a column. Even your long-running column got terminated on the excuse that the paper was revamping.

But God’s blessing is bountiful and comes in many forms. Lo and behold along came the Internet. So in February 2006 I began my “hijrah” to the online media. I started this and later opened a Facebook account.

Thought I still write weekly and monthly columns for an independent newspaper and a magazine – both in the Malay language - most of my media presence these days is online.

Whether in print or online, I am still a journalist. Even when I am using a social media platform like Facebook, my approach is journalistic.

So it comes as a pleasant surprise when Gaimu-sho – Japan’s Wisma Putra – through its Kuala Lumpur Embassy invited me to visit Japan as a social media journalist.

Social media journalist? It sounds awkward but I am grateful. It seems that my presence in the blogsphere and Facebook has been officially recognised by the Japanese Government.

So here I am, blogging from the New Otani Hotel in the heart of Tokyo, having flown in this afternoon on the super sleek ANA’s Boeing B787 Dreamliner, to begin a weeklong visit.

A Social Media Journalist in Tokyo: Welcome Sign at Narita
I can’t remember how many times I had visited Japan since the first one in 1979 as the maiden recipient of the Mitsubishi-Press Foundation of Asia Editor of the Year Award a year before.

But I remember a visit in 1991 with several fellow journalists in the run-up to the official visit by Emperor Akihito to Malaysia. We were honoured with an audience with the monarch at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. We had tea with His Majesty.

So here I am back In Japan once again with a very unique assignment -- to meet as many people of my choice as possible and report the outcomes to readers and followers of my blog and Facebook.

I had already posted on the Facebook and one friend, Abdul Hamid Mohamed, made a very pertinent point about the changing media scene.

He wrote: “He he, I have long said, social media is now the main stream media. What used to be main stream is now downstream with shrinking circulation etc. Main stream should also be rebranded - to its old name - traditional media…..”

Arigatou gozaimasu and sayonara for now.

Wallahuaklam.

I rarely watch news, reads papers these days as I sceptical of its' contents. It doesn't quench my appetite with their filtered and limited content as I need to know more inside out and what everyone else's opinion about it. So I always go online to get news.
I aware there's a lot of garbage out there as well but I think you're smart enough to differentiate them. While online paddle with care. Have a good day in Japan Datuk!..

  7. Salam Sdr Kadir, certainly you felt good after taking a short break from Malaysia with outerlimit zone of Malaysian, social and political environment.May be fresh ideas will emerge from your Japan's visit.
I did visit Japan once and mesmerised by the people and development that took place in Japan.

1.Perhaps you may find out the reasons why the leaders and head of the companies are very concerned about political morality and why they resigned immediately if something bad did happen under their jurisdiction. In Malaysia nobody give a damn despite cries form the public.

    2. Why team building is so important to their survival and the japanaese cohesive society, gell together in the hour of need.Is it to do with their religion. What about freedom of expresiion of expression in Japan. In Malaysia freedom of expression is selective.

3.What about business culure and ethic. How come Malaysia with so many economic planning and programs, the Malays still do no well in their own country.

Well thats all Sdr Kadir, we need change and the change must be now. I rest my case sdr Kadir.

    Sallam Dato’

The increase of readers towards social media is because people have lost faith towards the traditional medias which are too biased and too much spinning of the news.

I think this trend will continue as more internet devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers adopted by more people in our country.

I hope you enjoy your time in Japan.

Terlebih dahulu Tahniah dan Syabas saya ucapkan...a true journalist.

Teruskan perjuangan Datuk...Speak your mind...which to me is ever inspiring!

    A safe journey Datuk.

Many journalists feel the need to speak up. More so than ever.

    "Itulah dia UMNO NAJIB.

TAHNIAH Baju Merah !  Anda memang layak sebagai Wira Umno !

PS - Pihak Polis diharap ambil tindakan sewajarnya mengikut undang2 negara ya. Tak perlu tweet pun ok ... "

Yes, when there is wrong silence is not an option.

    THE 24-HOUR REPLACEMENT AND SRC.

    Datuk,

The RM4 billion ($1 billion) loan from KWAP to SRC has never been explained. Where did it go?

We knew this 6 months ago:

"Investigations by Singapore authorities have revealed that SRC International managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil approved the transfer of US$11.95 million (RM48 million) of the company’s funds to Jho Low’s associate Tan Kim Loong.

Tan, according to The Wall Street Journal, is the original beneficiary of British Virgin Islands-based Tanore Finance, which had sent US$681 million to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts.

Tanore Finance reportedly received funds, through intermediaries, from British Virgin Islands-based Aabar Investments PJS Limited where US$3.5 billion of 1MDB’s funds was diverted to."

Who is "Tan Kim Loong"? None other than Tanore Finance, the "Arab donor" of the 2.6 billion in July 2015, known as the "681 American pies".

Now that the Swiss say that $800 million of that $1 billion from KWAP was stolen, the spotlight is glaring in the face of the 24-hour replacement.

The Swiss requested assistance from him in Jan 2016. Tak dapat pun. So they have waited for 10 months. In the meantime, the Swiss have got everything they requested from Singapore, even though the request was made only in April 2016.

The 24-hour replacement is a civil servant paid by the rakyat to defend the rakyat's interests.

His job is not to cover-up the thefts of Umno politicians. He is not an unofficial KBU in his chambers.

What does he plan to do now?

    Hide?

Hide under his blanket and hope the Swiss go away? Tell them the documents are "lost"? We have signed a mutual legal assistance treaty. Are we going to just ignore it?

This is what Malaysia has been reduced to under the misrule of Datuk Seri I Mappadulung Daeng Mattimung Karaeng Sandrobone Sultan Abdul Jalil.

We are a nation of liars and cheats, who cannot even face the world.

  21. Nampaknya blogger Pro-Najib sedang bermati-matian memburuk-burukkan Bersih-5. Mungkin mereka mamhu mengalih perhatian Rakyat dari insiden Baju-Merah flying-kick seorang biker Baju-Kuning.

Untuk pengetahuan semua... inilah kali pertama saya menyokong BERSIH. Sebabnya jelas.

    1. Versi Pertama - PAS sedang berpelok dengan DAP. (Ketika itu Melayu-PAS sanggup jadi lembu, baring ditengah-jalanraya)

    2. Versi Kedua - PAS atau Haji Hadi, berpisah dengan Guan Eng DAP. (95% peserta adalah Cina. Polis sangat tegas ketika itu. Kontigen FRU, siap-sedia dengan tear-gas... ditugaskan menghalang Geng Baju-merah mendekati/bertembung dengan Baju-Kuning. KJ pun... pernah berair biji-mata kena asap pemedih-mata. Ketika itu juga... Duta China turun ke Petaling Street bersama ahli politik MCA).

    3. Versi Ketiga - Dr.M keluar UMNO kerana scandal 1MDB-Jho Low. Hutang berpuloh-Billion, sebahagiannya, tidak tahu kemana dibelanjakan. Muhyiddin & Mukhriz dipecat, manakala Shafie Afdal tersingkir... tanpa diberi peluang bela-diri. Akhirnya... UMNO berpecah kepada Bersatu. (Melayu kembali menyokong Bersih. Polis tahu... setakat Melayu-terajang-Melayu... tak jadi hal. Memang pun Melayu berani dengan bangsa sendiri je. Kalau Mat Motor tu... berkulit cerah... sudah tentu tak kena flying-kick)

Nota: Yang pelik... Jamal Tongkol pun pernah dirakam gambar, berbaju Kuning Bersih. Tak syak lagi... pada setengah orang... WANG adalah segala-galanya.

    Harap Maklum.

    ARUL KANDA LIES AGAIN:

The 1MDB auditor Deloitte resigned because it was unable to complete the audit of the state investment fund’s 2015 accounts, 1MDB president Arul Kanda Kandasamy said.

Arul Kanda told students at a town hall session at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur last night that this is because the required documents had been confiscated by the police during a raid in July last year.

“We could not audit the accounts after the company’s records had been taken by the police during a raid in July 2015. All the company’s records had been taken for further investigation."

    THE TRUTH.

Deloitte finally quit on 26 July 2016, just 6 days after the DOJ suit was filed.

"Deloitte in a separate statement referred to the civil forfeiture complaint filed by the United States Department of Justice (DoJ) on July 20.

It said the complaint contains information, which, if known at the time of the 2013 and 2014 audits of 1MDB, would have impacted the financial statements and affected the audit reports.

Accordingly, it said, the audit reports issued by Deloitte in connection with the 2013 and 2014 financial statements of 1MDB should no longer be relied upon."

Pendek kata, the DOJ suit showed that massive fraud had happened, with the full knowledge of MO1, their main client.

This is not the first lie that Arul has told.

    There have been many.

Who will ever hire him after this?

    Pemerhati Setia.

Saya tertarik bila sudara ngatakan umumnya orang Jepun tu jujur. Ngapa jadi gitu .. kan ke orang Jepon tu tak de ugama, malainkan kitab budaya prosedur tata-cara kehidupan sahaja sahaja.

Kita pula miliki kitab naskah agung, mukjizat sepanjang zaman.

Bila dosa dah bersih, duit cilok tak tau kat mana .. tung tang tung tang .. senyap .. happy ending, kaya tujuh keturunan, mungkin kaya sampai kiamat sebab duit bunga pon tak tau cam na nak dihabiskan. Malah bila mati pun sah semacam ada lesen masuk syurga.

Sekarang ni kita sibuk pula nak mencontohi Jepun kerja 6 jam.

    BUGIS VANITY PROJECT?

"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has launched an official mobile application that allows the public to interact and share ideas and suggestions with him.

According to the description on Google Play Store and Apple Appstore, the app is “specifically designed for the convenience of users and to enable interaction with the Prime Minister of Malaysia”.

Users are able to use the app to get the latest updates and announcements from Najib as well as stay connected to all of his official social media sites."

So now there's a convenient way to arrange transfers from overweight Chinese boys pretending to be Arab princes?

Can I suggest they call this app "e-Songlap"?

It should come with a warning:

"Downloading this app may corrupt your phone."

  29. I just want answers to what happened to the RM4 billion loan taken by SRC and where was it applied? Yes- the usual Dale Carnegieic or Napoleon Hill who, what, where, why, when and how.

Don’t give us the filibuster treatment. Getting a truthful answer is always frustrated by all sort of red-herrings. It’s not audited. It’s still a classified case. We are looking after the money - it is safe assures the PM.
No one believes the PM anymore.

What happened to the 2 goons who were looking after the money? The Nik Faisal person and the Dato Suboh chap. I hear the Dato Suboh chap is frequently sighted at the Chengkih restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail while the Nik Ariff Faisal fellow is rumoured to be having a good time in Indonesia. Pak- kamu sudah diperkosai atau sudah memperkosai? Bila pulang pak?

    They are protected by MO1.

Why aren’t these people brought in for questioning? Up to today, SRC hasn’t explained its illegal transfer of RM42 million into Najib’s account. If Najib doesn’t have control and doesn’t know about his personal account, how can we trust this man with running this country? This man must be the thickest PM we have ever had.

Aku nak coret sikit berkenaan tulihsan 'pembahas' hang En Zalman A yg kerap komen di media sosial, kali ni hak pukui 10.19 pagi, pasai Arul Kanda Kandasamy, tak salah aku dia ni Ketua Eksekutib/presiden 1MDB.

    Saudara Panglima Potaseh,

    Datuk,

Congratulation Datuk AKJ...the Social Media Journalist!

It is good to know that the Japanese government has recognised Datuk as the Social Media Journalist for a reason...none other than Datuk's contribution toward the use of the Internet as the main medium of communication replacing traditional media.

I am sure the visit to Japan come as a pleasant surprise.

God is indeed bountiful...no one ever predicted that the Internet is one of the greatest human inventions ever after the hand phone. For the first time, we are able to communicate to our heart's desire, never possible before...from the deep of the Borneo rain forest to the concrete jungle of Manhattan.

As a Social Media Journalist, Datuk is definitely at the forefront of this leading technology to open up more opportunity to get more and more people, especially Malaysian, to reach new height in social media communication.

With it, come new responsibility, I am very sure of that, not to curb human freedom and free of speech, but to explore and make it possible as we move forward in search of the truth and justice.

Datuk, have a wonderful stay in Japan...please tell the, your good Japanese friends, that we, the small village people, have the same desire to have a good leader like them too even though we live near a jungle.
