Truly Asia Growingly Crime Ridden

A Kadir Jasin

[ATTENTION, anonymous comments will not be published. Please use Google Account, OpenID or Name/URL to comment. Thank you]

WHEN, many many moons ago, the then Singapore Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, allegedly described Johor Baru as a murder capital, Malaysians erupted in anger.

Today, Mr Lee is no longer the PM. But as Minister Mentor, he is still very influential. Johor Baru, however, continues to have its fair share of murder and mayhem. The distinction of being the murder capital of Malaysia has to be Kuala Lumpur. (If I am wrong, I hope Pemandu Chief, Idris Jala, or his aides will enlighten us.)

But it’s not murder and mayhem per se that I would like to talk about. Instead I would like to guess and speculate on the reasons why crime is so utterly rampant in our beloved Malaysia in these last few years.

The influx of immigrants – legal and illegal – is one. From media reports, it’s clear that criminal elements in the immigrant community are not only preying on Malaysians, they also prey on their own kind.

The other is our desperation to attract foreign tourists and students to our “Malaysia truly Asia” that we inadvertently allowed in African and Persian drug smugglers, Nigerian black money operators, Chinese prostitutes and whatever else were care to mention.

While official and private purveyors of tourism and private education are proud of their achievements, our beloved Malaysia has become the haven for international misfits and miscreants.

Add to this is the lackadaisical attitude, abuse of power and corruption among members of the law enforcement agencies and not to mention the apparent lack of leadership in the realm of law and order – too many “amaran” and not enough “tindakan” – (too many warnings and not enough actions).

The society is also to be blamed. The mata-mata (policemen and women) have to reason to shoot our teenage sons and daughters if they are at home sleeping or doing home work at 2am.

But you give the mata-mata the reason to draw his guns when your teenage sons or daughters, who are below the legal driving age, “stole” your cars, went on a joyride and drove like demons upon seeing the mata-mata in patrol cars.

Look, your failed to raise your sons and daughters to be respectful, law abiding young men and women and you want the whole world to sympathise with you when they got shot by the mata-mata.

Maybe we should all pause and asked the question: What will these lawbreaking, disrespectful teenagers become when they grow up?

Would they become doctors and engineers, teachers and philosophers if as teenagers they would rather “stole” your cars at midnight and went for the tarik with their friends when they should be at home sleeping or studying?

They are more like to end up being mata-mata (no disrespected intended), illegal racers, drug addicts, small time hoods and felons.

And finally, crime rate is on the rise because, thanks to the abolition of the Emergency Ordinance, the Banishment Act and the ISA, many true criminals have found themselves back in society to kill each other and to inflict harm on law-abiding citizens.

Bernama reported on Dec. 6 that an unidentified gunman wearing a ski mask shot dead a scrap metal trader, identified as M. Siva Murugesan, 32, at a stall in Batu Caves, Gombak.

Gombak Police deputy chief Supt Rosly Hassan said the Murugesan of Kampung Wira Damai, Jalan Sri Gombak, Selangor was having a drink with a friend when a tall dark man wearing a blue pair of jeans, a white T-shirt with blue stripes and a ski mask, walked up to him at 12.30 am and fired three shots.

So, who are we to blame for this sad, frightening state of affair? It has a lot do with our own lack of thinking power or laziness to think, our gullibility and our craze for money. So, Malaysia is not only truly Asia but is fast becoming its crime capital too. Pardon me for my desperation and exasperation. Wallahualam.

i'm totally not agreed with some of your statements in this particular article.

to me, you're in the wrong when you blindly wrote "...Would they become doctors and engineers, teachers and philosophers if as teenagers they would rather “stole” your cars at midnight and went for the tarik with their friends when they should be at home sleeping or studying?..." as nobody knows what are going to happen in the future.

in my humble opinion, it's not where you start in life, it's where you end up.

just for your info, i've read somewhere in one of our local newspaper last few weeks about a ex-porno actor who later became a district attorney in the USA.

Datuk AKJ,
You forgot the mention the seeming ease in which guns are, urm, available to these badhats.

Sometimes you get to read firearms being used in petty - pittance money robbed/stolen/mugged - crimes even.

Are we THAT porous a country?

It could well be that all these malaise is because we as a nation had allowed ourselves to the godhood of the RM over everything else and is now reaping what we sow.

A bit too melodramatic, yes? My apologies but like you - and I suspect millions of other plain folks - are just too exasperated with how things are turning out in this country.

Wasalam.

Salam dato,

AND NO CONTROL on immigrants.

Pi la Chow Kit , dah jadi `mini jakarta'.Pi pasar selayang, dah jadi bangla city.. kat pasar malam

Last last kalau nak tenguk melayu asli (bukan orang asli),kena la pi FELDA atau RISDA, tu pun kalau depa depa ni tak `sapu' lagi.....

Biar saya tambah. Malaysia sejak zaman Tun Hussein semuanya nak claim hebat dan pecah rekod dunia.....sayang for the wrong reasons.

Buat bendera nak pecah rekod dunia.

1. The influx of immigrants – legal and illegal.

2. Foreign tourists and students.

3. Look, your failed to raise your sons and daughters to be respectful, law abiding...

Jangan hanya lihat angka gaji perkapita.

4. And finally, crime rate is on the rise...

Tapi perihal PATI memang menakutkan.

Reading all the personal thoughts would bring me to the state of denial which some people say 'comfort zone'. It is so true that at this rate, people are no longer care about what happened next door, they like to keep it personal and take it for granted. As for business, they keep their own pot close to their circle only which sometime seemingly look selfish.

This is just a minor scope of 'wisdom' of the real story so if you can imagine the whole Malaysian have this societal predicament and believe in and what more living with it- you think.

Aslkum Dakj dan semua.

Pemerhatian saya. Sila betulkan kalau saya silap.

1. Sejak 5 dekad yg lalu majoriti Melayu semakin miskin. Duit mereka berpindah kepada org Cina, India dan Melayu UMNO sori beberapa kerat pemimpin UMNO( yg nampaknya dah bertambah kaya hingga tidak perasaan atau tak percaya ahli UMNO dan Melayu yg lain semakin miskin).

2.Saya masih ingat bila Tun Razak yg saya kagumi meninggal pd tahun 1976 maka anaknya bernama Najib pun pulang dari England pada umur 23 tahun. Cakap Melayunya pun pelat macam mat saleh dilantik jadi ahli parlimen Pekan. Saya terfikir anak PM yg tak perbah rasa susah inikah yg nak perjuang nasib Melayu?

bersambung....

Unknown said...

Dgn izin Dakj

saya sambung

Kenapa? Sebab selain dari darah keturunan, orang2 ini berpengaruh kerana kekayaan yg mereka warisi.....kalau nak kira gaji menteri , exco dan wakil rakyat kalkulator pun hairan dari mana puak2 ni boleh kaya raya kalau bukan dgn jalan bengkok. Orang2 sangat berhati2 mengawal jajahan takluk mereka hingga boleh menjadi brutal walaupun sesama UMNO. Apa lagi kalau dengan orang PR.

4. Kuasa yg pemimpin UMNO bahgian sangat besar dan berpengaruh sehingga dah menjadi trend kalau ketua pemuda UMNO Bahgian keatas sekarang ni rata2 bergelar Dato'.

7. Kalau Melayu yg Islam yg sepatutnya kenal halal haram pun tergelincir inikan pulak yg bukan Melayu. Apalagi sedap je mereka mengambil peluang hingga bertambah terpibggirlah nasib org Melayu..

8.Moral of the storey kalau pemimpin UMNOBN jahat maka segar bugarlah budaya samseng dan yg sewaktu dgnnya di negara malang ni.

3. Saya tetap kata, penswastaan law and order adalah tak bermoral.

Terima kasih.

Can a 17-year old drive a car?

PUTRAJAYA: A teenage boy died on the spot after the car he was driving skidded and crashed into a lamp post here Friday.

In the 4.45pm accident, Muhammad Azeem Suhaimie Sulaiman, 17, from Bangi, Selangor suffered serious head injuries when his car broke in half.

According to a police source at the scene, the victim was believed to have been driving alone from the Alamanda shopping centre towards the Putrajaya International Convention Centre during a heavy downpour. - Bernama

By the way, I have been reliably informed by sources that did not want to be identified that Beta Tegap Sdn Bhd can improve its AES and, possibly earn more income, by proposing to the government an improved version of the system.

The improved system is manufactured by Patek Kuat AG. The combination of Beta Tegap's and Patek Kuat's systems will make the AES very strong and highly profitable.

I was told by a vendor of the Patek Kuat AG that their system can detect not only people exceeding the speed limit and beating the traffic light, it can also detect under-aged people illegally driving a car, drivers with expired driving license, people driving stolen cars, people driving while drunk, people not respecting police outriders escorting VIPs, people not giving way to dark-tinted Proton Perdana with siren and blue strobe light, and, more importantly, people who drive while opposing the AES.

If Beta Tegap and/or its agents are interested in this super sophisticated fuzzy logic Patek Kuat System, it/they can contact me via this blog. Maybe I can earn a reasonable commission - over the counter and legal of course.

Thank you.

SALAM DATO dear .... its unique number we are rubbish and that immigrants are human beings because they are protected in terms of certain laws and rights. We can see our environment from any critic would surely say if immigrants want to see only native Malays in FELDA or RISDA I think the impression is one place that already had many immigrants that are NOT HALAL and even as much nya.tapi what the government through the department does not carry out the responsibility entrusted her to trust or have certain elements in this case ..... go wherever his POLICE and immigration also has been entrusted by the people, not the ruling party to take care of their entry into the country if they sleep or just do not see .... for me the whole department for those working at there should be a sense of shame and a sense of what to eat these days is like eating illegal things .... DATO me this is just not the same status workers with them, but I have a heart and feelings of frustration with what happened to me an example of our own manufactured its immigrants are more dear and loved ones of the same local people to earn a living .... I do not even know why this happens either officials same even prefer them for their diligent work was not also possible that there is an element coffee money I do not even know la hopefully not compromised the country already is. DATO THANK MY ENGLISH NOT GOOD. SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT TIME.

Tiga kategori pemandu ni pun dah cukup tiggi risiko kat jalanraya.

Masaalah rumah tangga, jual harta, curi dan hutang, mungkin bunuh membunuh bertambah.Bertambahlah kerja polis.

Memang benar kata pepatah Arab, kalau kita memilih serigala menjaga ternakan kambing-biribiri, melantik penyamun/penyangak untuk menjaga harta khazanah negara, apakah keselamatan-kesejahteraan yg kita harapkan? Tepuk dada tanyalah aqal yg waras.

My observation is that the upper middle class and the professionals (comprising both the Malays and non-Malays) are doing very well in Malaysia. But the picture looks bleak for the majority down-trodden class particularly the non-Malays – the Chinese and Indians. Many of them eke out a living as security guards, lorry drivers, newspaper delivery men, street hawkers and petty traders. As for the other low salaried staff among them are generally employed in the private sector as the public sector is almost entirely dominated by the Malays. So the frustrated and daring among them form gangs and resort to big time robberies, heists and kidnappings with weapons and arms - often killing their targets in the process. Joblessness is the main social factor for the commission of these crimes. Pull off one high value robbery and you will earn enough to feed you and your family perhaps for one full year. As the funds run low you plot and scheme for the next big job to carry out.

Illegal immigrants also commit crimes no doubt but theirs is nothing compared to the ones by locals.

The government should open up the civil service and its other agencies to provide ample jobs for the non-Malays. Denial of jobs in these sectors and lack of opportunities elsewhere is the source of all problems for segment of non-Malays to commit most of these high profile crimes.
