His closest rival, Parti Cinta Malaysia’s vice-president Huan Cheng Guan received 3,583 votes. Independent candidates Mohd Nabi Bux Mohd Abdul Sathar received 799 votes and Abu Backer Sidek Mohammad Zan 225 votes, respectively. All the three lost their RM15,000 deposits.

Acording to media reports, Bukit Gelugor has 82,431 registered voters of which 74.49% are Chinese, 14.4% Malays and 10.56% Indians.
In the 2013 GE, Karpal polled 55,839 votes against 14,061 by BN’s Teh Beng Yean of the MCA. It meant that the late Karpal received 78.88% of the valid votes.
