Kerajaan pantau laman web, SMS

PM: Those who spread untruths on the Net will be detained

By IAN MCINTYRE

ianm@thestar.com.my

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Prime Minister has issued a warning – those who spread untruths and slander on the Internet will face the law.

If information in blogs, websites and online portals were incorrect, bordered on slander, caused disturbance or compelled the public to lose faith in the nation’s economic policies, their authors would be detained for investigation, said Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

“We cannot allow such matters to flow through uncontrolled,” he told newsmen after attending a briefing on the proposed Islamic Civilisation Park in Pulau Wan Man here.

“They say all kinds of things, make all kinds of dubious claims. We cannot allow them to abuse the freedom earned under the media. If left alone, they can say or pass on all kinds of things.”

Abdullah also said that those who sent out such information via short message system (SMS) would also be held accountable.

“If they abuse the freedom – more than the present freedom given without any restriction – we cannot allow it,” he declared.

“Where in the world is there such a freedom, where one can freely spread incorrect information and slander without having to own up to it?”

Asked if he was calling for a control mechanism, Abdullah said he would leave it to the police to investigate first.

It was reported recently that the Internal Security Ministry was investigating several online sites following a string of misreporting that caused tension and confusion among Internet users.

Earlier, the Prime Minister was briefed on the proposed park’s facilities. It will have 21 replicas of historical monuments that feature Islamic architecture, including the National Mosque (Malaysia), the Grand Mosque (Mecca), the Dome of Rock (Jerusalem) and the Taj Mahal (India).

The centrepiece of the RM250-million park, which will be completed in June next year, will be a crystal mosque which can accommodate 800 people.

Abdullah also opened a nipah (mangrove palm) sap collection and processing centre in Kelulut, Marang, here.

He said the palm had long existed in the country but only its sap had been tapped so far to produce a drink while its parts had not been commercially exploited.

“The drink has now been bottled and marketed to as far as West Asia,” he said.

Abdullah said nipah, abundant along rivers in Terengganu, should be further exploited to produce more products such as brown sugar, vinegar and flavour for ice cream.

My thoughts:

I have lived long enough; going 59 in a few days.

I have been a journalist long enough; 37 years in all.

I have “collaborated” with the authorities long enough.

I have seen threats to civil liberty and press freedom often enough.

I have heard of promises of liberty, freedom and openness often enough.

I have seen press freedom being lost and rarely recovered often enough.

I have seen the ups and downs of the country often enough.

I have to cope with law and order issues everyday of my working life.

I have been named in libel suits countless times, questioned by the SB and interviewed by the ACA and Securities Commission.

I have seen four Prime Ministers came and gone.

I have seen countless young upstarts came like thunder and disappeared like tumbleweed in the desert wind.

I have seen the roads leading away from the ballot boxes littered with broken promises.

I have seen so many things that make me cry.

I have seen as many things that make me laugh.

I have and will always cry for this beloved country of ours.

Dato,

Sekarang nak suruh rakyat tutup mulut pula? Apa nak jadi dengan kerajaan kita ni?

Selamat hari jadi Dato', semoga dipanjangkan umur, dimurahkan rezeki dan usaha-usaha Dato' ini diberkati.

Assalamualaikum,

Alternatively, the govt or any third-party company or NGO should propose to introduce internet ID, in which every bloggers and forumers can use in order to participate in online discussion. The internet ID should be universal enough so that it can be applied to any blog and forum. The govt or a company will host this internet ID and user can use it to participate in any forum or blog that accept this ID.

The internet ID, act like the IC should cast away anonymous user and boost credibility of news or opinion post by identify user. From there, every users are now responsible for every posting they made in terms of their own credibility and any legal implication. Because they are now known to the public they should be more careful in writing opinion thus avoiding to post 'surat layang', fitnah and caci maki which has no value in terms of news and story. Even if the story that they tell is true, they are force to bring evident and fact of the story to avoid it became 'surat layang' and jeoperdize their creadibility and been humiliate by other participants.

I can imagine the culture of online discussion will change with internet ID where people are more intrested to read opinion from user with ID and cast away anonymous user and treat their opinion as a 'junk opinion'.

For example, every commenter in Kadir Jasin Blog will have their picture and real name shown with their comment. Why afraid? Throw away this culture of 'baling batu sembunyi tangan' that plagued the internet for so long.

Dato,

As mentioned in so many replies, the reason why people resort to internet for info as the readers are skeptical about what is being said in the present newspaper.

For a long time, I am one of those avid newspaper reader. I used regularly buy New Sunday Times and Migguan Malaysia as I would like to read about the commentaries. Now like other readers I don't bother to read the commentaries as alot them do not reflect anymore the majority sentiments and some of them are considered on the brink of misinformation. Previously, I pride myself to be pro establishment but now due so many flaws happening all around me, I began to become apprehensive of the goverment policies.

The truth is the blogs become my source of information. The truth is the goverment has been seen unreliable. If the goverment able to show some credibility and the public perceive the goverment is fighting for the goodness of the people, I don't think people would resort to sourcing from the blogs.

Most people basically already form some type of opinion. The reason they go for bloggin is to know more and to understand better based on the opinion that they already formed. Should their opinion aligned with with what is being said in the present newspaper, people would not easily resort to bloggin. They would just treat all of these as hearsays only.

The goverment currently trying to hide so many issues from the public hoping that sooner or later hoping the public would simply forgot, just like what happent to DSAI. The numbers of sympathisers have declined, due to other issues that they felt more important.

The govement is working slowly to repress the role played by the bloggers. However, the more they try to repress, the more adamant the general public be in finding the information from the blogs. The internet is like when someone realeasing the something from pandora box. Once you released it, you won't able to closed it back. Similar to internet, the harder you try to repress it, the harder people will try to get more information out of it.

Finally, AAB will soon realize that it will try to fight against the loss cause. The harder he tried, the harder it will be as if AAB is digging his own grave deper and deeper everyday. Tun already realized about this and now wonder he didn't try to curb the blogging in the first place.

Whatever it is the truth will always there, especially those that is dear to everyones heart. During Tuns tenure we never heard that the printed newspaper competing with the blog especially those slandering and attempting to misinform the public about Tun's and about the situation in Malaysia as a whole.

Feei Umar,

Pardon me for asking: Is Feei Umar your real name?

This is important because you made a strong case for registering bloggers and people submitting comments to blogs. You even suggested that they be issued with Internet Identity Card (ID).

If you are not using your real identity, would you continue to blog with me and with other bloggers if you’re required to apply for an Internet ID?

I think if a person is courageous and committed, and believes in what he or she is doing, the time to start using his or her real identity is now.

I love to have more commentators using their real identities when writing to this blog. You should join me in taking collective responsibility and sharing the risk for the things we say here.

Thank you.

Saudara,

You, and many others before you, have always known and insisted that nowhere is freedom of expression more challenging than in a developing country. Illustrous sons of Malaysian journalism - Tan Sri A Samad Ismail, A Rahim Kajai, Tan Sri Mazlan Nordin to name a few - were full of reminders that journalism in a country such as ours MUST always be accompanied by responsibility, maturity and a sense of pride. I believe that at some point or other you must have come under their tutelage. Bloggers must have caused an impact for the PM to issue that warning, one which is not to be taken lightly I'm sure.

I'm sure that there are bloggers and bloggers, as do Editors and Editors. For someone as experienced as you, and having also served the Royal Commission of the Police Force, you must take your blogging very seriously. Good for you. I marvel at your stamina and passion Saudara.

Dear Datos (AKJ & AhmadT)
I've many more years before I reach 59, God Willing! I've had 22 years in the Press (with upper case P) before seeking greener pastures as a communications strategist and trainer. It's now 6 years since I left journalism. I still recall vividly most of the incidents & tragedies (not to mention a few comedies in between) that had occurred in my beloved Malaysia since 1978. Yes, Malaysia is my "tanah tumpah darah" even though I've worked for German, American and French interests in my career. And yes, Dear Dato' AKJ, I will weep for Malaysia if there is another "sweep". We must all learn to live and let live. Cheers KH

Assalamualaikum,

Feii Umar is my blogger nickname. My real name is Fayzi Omar and I'm 28 years old.

Writing in a blog or forum is like giving speech on stage with hundred and thousand of audience. The different is, people know you if you on stage. People know your background, people know your level of education and people know how old you are.

If I'm on stage right now, I'll be giggling and sweating and not knowing what to say. And I guess most of us will decline too if been asked to talk on stage.

Suddenly in the net, we become hero and champion behind those anonymous nickname.

Don't abuse this privilege of expression. Let us together take reponsibility for what we write.

I do not see anonymity of bloggers making their posts as a problem. If anybody wants to trace the real identity of a particular blogger, it could be done. If a blogger insist all other blogger to show their true identity before posting, it is up to the blogger himself to set the policy in his blog.

Posting with nickname or anonymously allows people to express their true feeling and thoughts on a particular matter. One can see the true feelings of the blogger through his expressions. And I think this is useful.

It is just like real life conversations. It is normal for people to hide their true feelings but only say things which are acceptable on that particular conversation.

Of course, like anything else, anonymity has its drawbacks. There will be some irresponsible bloggers who will abuse it. (Like throwing stone to someone and hiding his hand behind his back) But because the real identity of that person could be traced, we should not have reservations about bloggers posting with their nickname.

Readers should judge for themselves the content posted by bloggers where there is slander or it is the truth. The basic rule is arguments must be supported by facts.

The internet has provided an alternative channel for people to obtain information, to find out the other side of the coin of a particular issue or story. The government should not deprive the public of this 'right' (if I may say so).

I agree with the government to take legal action against those who slander or spread lies provided the government do it judiciously. If the government feels some bloggers is slandering, sue them and make them prove their claim. Only by this way they can gain the confidence of the public. Not by ISA detention.

The government should have nothing to fear. Let bloggers post their views, if it is a lie, sue them in the court.

But if the Malaysian government take action to clamp down blogs and deny the public this channel to air their opinions, it is no different from a communist government.

HAPPY 59TH BIRTHDAY. MAY YOU HAVE A LONG LIFE SO THAT WE (SELFISHLY) CAN CONTINUE TO BENEFIT FROM YOUR WISDOM, INSIGHT AND INTELLIGENCE.

Of many great men at the front, meaning known to all and sundry, there are many more (and even greater men) behind the facade and away from the limelight.

May you continue to fight for the light of truth, justice and freedom in this country.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AGAIN!!!

Terima kasih Ahmad Talib, Feei Umar, KH Lim, Azahari dan semua yang mengulas memakai nama sebenar. Feii pakai gambar macam saya.

Terima kasih Azahari. You don't have to like me. I am more than grateful if you care to hear my views and share yours with visitors to this weblog.

I hope my vote will become more powerful than tsunami itself.

Takde berita lain ka kat TV? Aduh, tambang MAS naik lagi.

Ternyata slogan “DARI RAKYAT, OLEH RAKYAT DAN UNTUK RAKYAT” hanyalah slogan semata-mata.

Sekian

Sekian...menulis bukan kerana nama...

Dr Mahathir tanya Pak Lah 4 soalan. Pak Lah sampai la dok diam. Dok tak dok menantu dia jawab. Yang menantu dia ni sapa? Perdana Menteri ka? Timbalan Perdana Menteri ka? Menteri Luar ka? AG ka?
Pak Lah kata dia bukan penasihat. Pasai Pak Lah orang agama kita pun pecayalah. Tapi la ni menantu dia jawab semua. Jadi betui la kot yang orang dok kata dia penasihat nombor satu.
Ih, ajaib sungguh negeri kita la ni. Pasai ni la kot orang pandai macam Orang Celik merapu macam orang kena demam panas.
Apa menatang KPI ni? Khairi Punya Industri ka? Tak kan macam tu kot. Buang buruh nak kurang belanja sapa pun bulih buat. Tak payah dok bagi gaji besar kat Idris Jala. Mandor estet Sungai Tok Pawang dok buat macam tu lama dah.
Buang orang, naik tambang, jual kapai terbang, bagi laluan kat Air Asia sapa pun bulih buat.
Ni kita kena ingat. Orang Celik kalu macam ni hang pikiak, tak lama lagi hang pun buta. Buta perut ni teruk dari buta mata.

Assalamualaikum,

Tapi orang tanya, siapa KJ, sebelum ni saya pun tak kenal siapa dia, tetiba saja nama naik jadi deputy Datuk Hish. Menang tanpa bertanding pula tu. Ingat bodoh sangat ke, siapa berani nak cabar, tengok sikitlah dia tu siapa - orang boleh fikir.

Semalam ada pula ahli kata tak kan kita nak suruh dia duduk kat Chow Kit minta sedekah, hey kita tak cakap macam tu, taklah sampai nak suruh dia buat macam tu.
