IF the Opposition-initiated parliamentary caucus on oil and gas royalties takes off under the chairmanship of the Barisan Nasional member for Gua Musang, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, history of sorts will be made.
If indeed the Kelantan Prince and Umno veteran had agree to head the caucus as was claimed by the Parliamentary Opposition Leader, Anwar Ibrahim, on Nov. 24, we could end up witnessing the birth of some sort of bi-partisan politics in Malaysia.
Anwar told the Press that Tengku Razaleigh aka Ku Li had agreed to head the caucus to deliberate on the issue of petroleum and liquefied gas royalty.
Understandably, the reaction from the government side was guarded. On Nov. 25, Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin was reported as saying that he hoped Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah would make an “educated choice” on the invitation to head the proposed caucus.
With the Opposition parties having strong presence in the Parliament and are presenting themselves as a common front, the movement towards some form of bi-partisanism cannot be totally dismissed.
In a two-party political system, bipartisanism refers to any bill, act, resolution, motion or any other action of the legislature in which both of the major parties or coalition of parties are in agreement.
On a more personal and private level, the Ku Li-Anwar collaboration does not come as a complete surprise to me for two major reasons.
Firstly Tengku Razaleigh is a very senior and independent-minded Umno leader. He is in a class of his own, partly because he’s the last surviving key player of early era. He is beholden neither to the government nor the current Umno leadership for his position.
He’s untouchable.
Secondly the Ku Li-Anwar relationship goes back a long way. Ku Li played key role in introducing Anwar to Umno in the opening months of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Administration back in the early 1980s. Anwar joined Umno in 1982.
As for the issue at hand, I personally do not see any harm in the Parliamentarians from both sides of the House revisiting the laws and practices pertaining to the oil and gas royalties paid to states.

BIPARTISAN POLITICS in MALAYSIA
---------------------------------
We are now moving towards a 2party
system(or maybe 3party system).For now,its a 2 Coalition system i.e.
Barisan Nasional(BN)vs PR(Pakatan
Rakyat).Possibly later on,there might be a Liberal(3rd party)as the
case in UK and USA.
For Malaysia,the reality of things
and events from era of Parameswara
(1400)to the Portugese(1511)to the
British(1700s-1940s),to the brief Japanese and Communist era(1942-1955).The efforts of UMNO-led Perikatan(with MCA,MIC)finally achieved Merdeka(Independence)in 1957.The rest is history from 1957 to 2008,where Malaysia was ruled totally uninterrupted until PRU12.
8th March 2008 to PRU13(2012/2013)
is METAMORPHOSIS time for the Malaysian Politics.
Either BN or PR,the focus should be for the people of Malaysia, the
wellbeings of Malaysians,the good
future for Malaysians, the Quality of Life, the infrastructures for the people, the clean environment,
education,good economic condition
etc etc...so the idea of just FOLLOW what the party says i.e.,by
being PARTISAN,should be changed and reconsidered for the GOOD of the RAKYAT,from the RAKYAT(elected Rep),by the RAKYAT(voters).....
I would say YES to BiPartisan Politics in Malaysia,if it is for the Good of Malaysian in general for Present or for the FUTURE.....
Dato',

TERIMA KASIH DATO AKJ
Tok Kadiaq
An excellent article but mind boggling i must add.Seed of Bipartisan Politics!Wishful thinking?
It's unfortunate our DPM resorted to the old mindset. What happens to RAKYAT DIDAHULUKAN?
God is great.Sabah,Sarawak,Trengganu and Kelantan are blessed with natural resources and to deny their rights would be fatal to those in power.
Tok, it's good to know 'idealist thoughts'is alive and kicking in you.
Dato'
Harapannya biarlah trend berkenaan terus berkembang. Kita juga ingin melihat satu masa nanti individu Pas sanggup berdiri sambil menopang belakang UMNO terutama apabila melibatkan isu yang lebih penting: kepentingan dan masa depan ummah!

Dear DAKJ
As an ordinary man, I agree that Tengku is an extraordinary politician. He was once a brilliant minister. He also was a strong competitor and nearly succeeded as PM. Basically, he was at his acme. However, that was 20 years back. BUT, we are talking about now: today: November 2009. Maaf cakap, it is not wrong to say that he is now beyond his prime. He is not supposed to make any peculiar decision. We don’t want to have another mishap. Let’s forget about the by-gone history. History is history. We have to look forward to.
Devoutly, I think if the petroleum royalty belongs to people of Kelantan, they deserve it. No doubt about that. Nearly 20 years, Kelantanese craves for a highway, a clean town, better sanitation, no rats and no salmonellosis, better waste management, better clean clear drinking water, a new Sultan Yahya bridge (previously was the longest bridge in Malaysia), proper duty free complexes replacing the ‘high chaparral'’ shops and so on. The oil royalty belongs to Kelantanese, not the current Kelantan Government, to get rid of cheeky attitude. TQ.
Assalamualaikum Dato' Kadir,
Bipartisan politics in this petroleum royalty case would eventually lead to bipartisan approval InsyAllah since kelantan state government has made a very strong case with irrefutable evidence and we the rakyat has noticed that this is pretty much the case. We, the Rakyat vouch for the petroleum royalty for kelantan even though the federal govt is a bit tad slow.
There goes the kpi for this year down the drain.

Dato',
.Dear Kadir.
Hello Mahayuddin.be gentlement la sadikit.

Firstly Tengku Razaleigh is a very senior and independent-minded Umno leader. He is in a class of his own, partly because he’s the last surviving key player of early era.
I agree,but I should add some more..
Tengku Razaleigh is the best PM we never had.
YBhg Dato'
Assalamualaikum,
Kita sekarang sedang memasuki era apa sahaja bolih jadi.
Raja Abdul Rahman bin Raja Mohammad Dain

Dear Datuk,
I think let the Central Govt decide whether to call it Royalty or Wang Ihsan so long as the money goes to benefit the people of Kelantan directly and not be spent along political consideration.
Ku Li is a "has been in politics". He should try to keep far away from any political maneuverings of the opposition because he is not going to gain anything from it.
salam,
AM,
abha saudi
i absolutely agree that ku li should be the pm of malaysia or at least the dpm. he is much smarter compared with the rest of the other dinosaurs in umno. he's way above them all.
It all boils down to how sincere Ku Li is. Maybe this is the opportunity for him to rejuvenate his political standing which is already in the twilight zone.
I think Ku Li should restrain himself from getting involved in this issue. Let Najib explains the whole situation and be transparent rather than continue politicising it. At the end of the the day, the loser will definitely be Najib.Najib must be conscious that his position is still fragile. Make no mistake about it. Najib cannot simply continue to be defensive and emulate the famous Tun Musa's attitude of being "elegant silence". Sort it out once and for all. Don't let others enjoy free ride on this issue and gain political mileage for FREE !!!
Nik Aziz tak payahlah mendoakan Najib supaya dia "jatuh tersungkur".
Ku Li has been? Jauh sekali.
OKJ kata, "The oil royalty belongs to Kelantanese, not the current Kelantan Government, to get rid of cheeky attitude."
You fail to recognised that the current government was legally appointed as the steward of public affair by the people of Kelantan through PRU. And you also fail to recognised the same application of Principal for Sabah, Sarawak and Terengganu. And yet again fail to recognise the particulars of the agreement via the Petroleum Act.
With RM1 billion in hand, there are much can be done than mere upgrades of High Chaparrals. When PAS took over Kelantan in 1990, Kelantan debt from Federal is hundreds of Millions. Now, the debt is not more than RM5 millions. And yet the state grow economically. Slower than most states? Yes, but growing in a most horizontal manner (wider effect) than any other states in Malaysia.
Does this prove the state government is wise enough financially?
Masa PRU12, some gave a very good remark,
See, kes PPRT masih kuat dalam ingatan orang Kelantan.
Giving out wang ehsan instead of royalty just reminded people of that case.
Fed Up
Too many cooks will spoil the rendang. Likewise, too many politicians will spoil a Government.
A weak Government brings instability, just as any other weak institutions. A weak army will never win wars.
Instead of having too many chiefs, we should have only one strong Government to propel the country forward, not backwards like the last few years.
Do away with stupid oppositions and stupid polititians. Gather the best brains and work as a team to make this country a role model in self-sufficiency, rather than arguing about 'he has more than me' issues. Only then, should we talk about bipartisanism to save the country from ripping apart.
Of course, the above is only a dream.
A GOOD MAN DOES NOTHING.
