Lacking Candidates in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar

A Kadir Jasin

JUST briefly - are the parties involved in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar parliamentary by-elections serious?

[REMINDER: No anonymous comments will be published.  Please use Google Account, OpenID or Name/URL. Pseudonym is accepted. Be respectful. No swearing. Thank you]

In Sungai Besar, Selangor the UMNO/Barisan Nasional is nominating its Sungai Panjang state assemblyman, Budiman Mohd Zohdi, as its candidate.

It’s convenient. Sungai Panjang is one of the state seats in Sungai Besar parliamentary constituency. So he is presumably already well known among the voters.

PAS, on the other hand, is bringing in an outsider who is also a state assembly member - Dr Abdul Rani Osman, the Meru state assemblyman. Presumably he is fairly familiar to the party’s supporter in Sungai Besar.

There are two possible reasons for this. First both parties do not have suitable local candidates, which is not surprising, and second with the polls being held during the Ramadhan fasting month, a full-scale campaigning is difficult. So familiar faces are helpful.

The absence of suitable candidates for both parties should not come as a surprise. Talents are not exactly unlimited in the Selangor Umno following its defeat in the 2008 general election.

Attempts to regenerate the party have been a failure as manifested by an even worse defeat during the 2013 GE.

PAS, which was gaining strength in the state during the last two GE’s, suffered a major setback when it broke in two following last year’s party election.

It splinter faction, Parti Amanah Negara, has said it would put candidates in both seats. If that happens, PAS will be put at a disadvantage and the chances of Umno/BN winning are brighter.

The situation is Kuala Kangsar is even more bizarre. Umno/BN has named the widow of its deceased representative, (Datin) Mastura Mohd Yazid, as candidate for the June 18 polls.

Her husband, late (Datuk) Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad died in a helicopter crash at Sebuyau, Sarawak on May 5 when campaigning in the Sarawak state election.

She was a housewife although she once served as a committee member of the Chembong Umno division in Negeri Sembilan. She is lawyer by training.

Is this an attempt at garnering sympathy votes or an indication that the Kuala Kangsar Umno too lacks suitable candidates that “an outsider” has to be named.

The Perak Umno is a shade better than its Selangor counterpart. Although it lost the state during the 2008, it regained control a few months later when three opposition members crossed the floor.

In the 2013 GE, it did a bit better winning 31 state seats against the oppositions’ 28.

PAS has also named a female candidate for the Perak royal town - Dr Najihatussalehah Ahmad, who is its Perak Muslimat (woman) leader. She is a private medical practitioner in the nearby Bota town.

Ideally, it should be a one-to-one contest between Umno and PAS if the idea is to send a strong signal to the government of Prime Minister, (Datuk Seri Mappadulung Daeng Mattimung Karaeng Sanrobone), Mohd Najib Abdul Razak.

For PAS it is has the additional task of proving that it not under the spell of (Datuk Seri) Haji Abdul Hadi Awang and the talks of Umno-PAS cooperation are nothing more than a ploy by Mohd Najib to win the heart of the PAS president.

PAS has to prove that it is not Umno-BN sidekick.

Salam Datuk,

We can safely conclude that PAS is indeed an UMNO sidekick.

What is alarming is that the hudud issue is being openly exploited by both parties.

There is no way that a Private Members Bill can be promoted 15 places in the running order without Umno help.

And then why did Hadi run away?

That was planned, too.

They can now play the Muslim card in the 2 by-elections and Najib can take attention from his escalating scandals.

But this use of religion for politics is very distasteful.

Here is Mappadulung Daeng Mattimung Karaeng Sanrobone thanking Haron Din for not believing that he received 2.6 billion in his personal accounts:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=bi--3fXHgv4

News report:

Will voters ask PAS what their updated views are?

Well, he longer tries to deny it.

What do PAS say now?

I know the Deputy President of PAS does not like liars and thieves.

On the campaign trail, both Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Datuk Dr Haron Din can quote the wise words of Ridhuan Tee from last year:

"KUALA LUMPUR, July 20 — Columnist Dr Ridhuan Tee Abdullah hailed PAS leaders Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and Datuk Dr Haron Din today as “statesmen” for not attacking Datuk Seri Najib Razak despite the series of corruption allegations faced by the prime minister.

“As a lowly citizen, I was so touched when the PAS spiritual leader and the PAS president did not think the worst of the prime minister, which was returned by the PM with thanks for their trust in him,” Tee wrote.

PAS president Hadi reportedly said earlier this month that US-based business daily the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) must provide at least four trustworthy witnesses to back its graft allegations against Najib after it reported that US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) was channeled from 1MDB to Najib’s personal bank accounts.

PAS spiritual leader Haron, meanwhile, has reportedly dismissed the WSJ report as illogical, claiming that those who abuse public funds would use a secret account instead of their personal accounts."

I think the number of witnesses globally may reach 400, never mind 4.

What will Hadi say then?

Datuk,

A little reminder for PDN (Parti Dedak Najib) as they prepare to play their "pendekar Melayu" cards in the by-elections (PAS Youth have already had a fancy dress party):

https://jebatmustdie.wordpress.com/2016/05/31/usd1-03-billion-diberi-kepada-jho-low-secara-langsung-apa-kata-umno/

In fact, not just PDN (Parti Dedak Najib) but PAS too, should reflect on this.

Salam Datuk

"...the talks of Umno-PAS cooperation are nothing more than a ploy by Mohd Najib to win the heart of the PAS president."

1. I never vote PAS all my life so never bother about them...about their internal or external political developments as such even though I know one or two very high ranking officials as childhood friends back in the kampong. I still have my PAS membership form...I think...like UMNO membership form...somewhere in my box files...never bother to join them all parties.

2. I am not an UMNO member...god lord, I never fill up those forms either, but a die-hard UMNO supporter who believes in its struggle all those years...particularly the STRUGGLE...despite at odds with some family members and friends who are with other locally bumiputra-based political parties.

3. PRU2013 would be my last vote for UMNO and BN...no matter what..even though we have a new PM before PRU14. What a relief!

4. My conscience is clear. So, no matter what ploy by UMNO...it ain't working for me no more.

5. My struggle for Malaysia in next few years of my remaining life, can no longer be identifiable with UMNO/BN struggle. It's all over for me. Enough is enough!

Terima kasih UMNO.

Terima kasih BN.

Selamat tinggal.

UMNO's pure marketing gimmick:

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Umno's move to facilitate the tabling to PAS's so-called hudud Bill was engineered to shore up Muslim support ahead of two crucial by-elections, according to BMI Research.

The Fitch Group unit also said the Malay nationalist party would not likely help the Islamic penal code become reality in Malaysia, and that the public act of helping table the Bill in Parliament has achieved the objective that Umno desired.

Umno's move to support the PAS Bill revealed, however, its lack of confidence in facing the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections, BMI Research said when noting the party barely managed to win both seats in Election 2013.

“As such, the move to elevate the Bill should be viewed as Umno's attempt to demonstrate that it is capable of upholding the role of Islam in the country and would be a better option than the other two Islamist parties,” the firm said.

So, it's like selling a product.....

1. Debater Zalman A, thank you for sharing with us the Fitch analysis. I thought so too. Neither Umno nor PAS is really committed to ending the Hudud issue. They want to keep it hanging so that they can pluck and kick it around for partisan purposes.

2. This is a classic example of self-righteous charade that the likes of Najib, Abdul Hadi and Harun Din would act out for the benefit of their uninformed audiences.

Wallahuaklam. Terima Kasih.

Datuk,
it is beyond any sense and incredible that Faisal and Suboh still continue to hold directorships in SRC.
Question: At the very least, surely the Finance Minister can be charged in court and sued for this "non-compliance" to good governance?
On the basic level, Putrajaya under the PM has shown it is totally out of sync with the investigation and pursuing the lost 1MDB funds and the SRC International monies.

Governments in Singapore and Switzerland are taking concrete action against the alleged crooks within their jurisdiction, while Malaysia, which is the epicentre of the fraud, still pretends no wrongdoing exists.

This is strong food for the opposition to bring up as evidence that Putrajaya is headless and led by nincompoops.

Well , agreed with you on the bizarre one .
No , not Datin Mastura but her instigator ... yeah that foul mouthed fellow by the name of Syed Rosli a.k.a Janda P#####k .

Now,of all the people from the parade of Tun M declaration , why did Tun M selected him ....
Surely this Syed Rosli fellow must be a reflection of Tun M vintage or else he would not be selected by Tun himself .
Yes ... bizarre it is ...

Funny , none of the ANC debater mentioned about it .
Guessed this Syed Rosli fellow is also a reflection of ANC gang too ...
Afterall they have the same mentor ..i.e Tun M .

Hadi's simple agreement with Najib is to create 3-cornered fights.

In one-on-one contests, UMNO loses in most seats.

But Hadi must realise his credibility is tied to Najib's.

Then it becomes a simple test of whether the Malay race wants to remain corrupt, weak and failed forever.

Najib is the perfect man to keep them that way.

The fault is ours. Not anyone else's.

"....Neither Umno nor PAS is really committed to ending the Hudud issue. They want to keep it hanging so that they can pluck and kick it around for partisan purposes."

Pepatah orang putih kata, "Mutual Assured Distruction", MAD.

1.I disagree with Zalman A analysis. He has no Malay and UMNO heart in him if he is a malayu.Macam orang tak sedar diri dan syok sendiri nampaknya.Since when was politic is corrupt free ?.Else that expression 'politics corrupt' does not exist .Huh...We can only minimise corruption right.Isn't that what the gomen is doing through all those various transformstions for the better.

2.One must not think UMNO and PM Najib is that stupid. He has more than 40years of politics in his blood. How many years of politics we have?.

3.We all know that PRK Sg Besar and K Kangsar the worthy winner will only be either UMNO or Pas and chances are UMMO will have a slight upper hand with their well organised machinery according to my bomoh. If that is true it shows that all these craps about 1 MDB and the 2.6 Billion so called scandals with the opposition political ploy and perceptions to hate PM Najib and his UMNO will not work at all. This include the doomed Deklarasi Rakyat. It only unite UMNO members more and we see that happening as they are united behind their mandated leader Najib like when Tun was their President then.Tun call for voters to vote UMNO/BN out will not work especially so he is no longer in UMMO and politically dah hilang sengat and direction.

4.With GE is due prior August 2018 the Pakatan Harapan will continue playing second fiddle same as the doomed Pakatan Rakyat. We will see UMNO and Pas working towards a perpaduan ummah to promote Islam as it should be.Salam ramadhan to all my muslim friends.
