TheStarOnline.tv has a clip entitled “PM: Malaysian Chinese are not Pendatang.”
Who are saying Malaysian Chinese are pendatang (immigrants) that forces Mohd Najib Abdul Razak to make the denial?
Even those whose tongues are loose and have the penchant for saying hurtful things know that today’s Malaysian Chinese are not pendatang.
Not the majority for sure although there could be a tiny minority who came from somewhere in the world, including China, and were recently granted citizenship. These new citizens are pendatang.
But the majority is not. Their grandfathers or great grandfathers came here as early as the 15th century although most arrived in mid-20th century. They are keturunan pendatang.
Some were brought here by the East India Company or its agents, but most came on their own as poor people escaping poverty and oppression in China. There night not be snakehead human smugglers then, but the immigrants came as indentured labourers to work in Chinese-owned tin mines and sundy businesses.
The British were more interested in the Indian laborers who toiled in their rubber plantations and tea estates. The immigrant Chinese were franchised to the Kapitan Cina and, in the Kinta Valley, Perak under the “protection” of the Ghee Hin and Hai San secret societies.
What the British unquestionably brought from China was the opium to satiate and at the same time enslaved the opium-addicted Chinese immigrants.
Until the 1960s there were still licensed opium dens in the country. Even in my kampung there was one such establishment although not all the addicts were Chinese laborers and boatmen. There were also Malay and Thai addicts.
For the Indians, there were licensed toddy shops that sold genuine coconut sap toddy. Toddy shops were usually located near the railway stations or the PWD (now JKR) workshops, where Indians were widely employed.
These were the legacies of the British era. Even when we became independent, the various communities continue to cling to their “colonial rights”.
Take education for instance. According to Wikipedia, (quoting Chow Kum Hor), “Malaysia is the only country outside mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau to have a complete Chinese-medium education system. The secondary Chinese-medium school in Malaysia is not funded by the government of Malaysia, existing in the form of privately owned Chinese independent high schools. However they represent only 5% of all Malaysia Chinese schools.”
[Chow Kum Hor (2008-01-31), “Battle to save Malaysia’s Chinese dropouts” – The Straits Times (AsiaOne News).]
Wikipedia further notes: “Today most schools in Malaysia are national-type schools fully or partially funded by the government, however during early 1960s roughly 60 Chinese schools rejected the Razak Report[33], they continue and insist on the use of Mandarin Chinese as teaching medium, these type of schools were to be later known as Chinese independent high school.”
Why are we so suddenly caught up in this pendatang issue to the point that one aristocratic Melayu from the Bugis land in Sulawesi even told his Chinese audience recently that he too was a pendatang? This poor soul clearly does not understand the Malay history and the geography of the Kepulauan Melayu – the Malay Archipelago.
Why the rush to become pendatang or to be associated with one? Shouldn’t we be thinking of ourselves as 1Malaysian?
As far as I am concerned, I have been 1Malaysian (1Malayan) long before Mohd Najib made 1Malaysia his political agenda and, in the process, sparked off the ongoing race-based debates.
I grew up in a riverside Malay village where our Chinese neighbours reared free-ranging pigs that trespassed our homesteads as they pleased.
Our Chinese neighbours they gave us kuih bulan (mooncake) and we gave them tapioca and yam for them to feed their pigs.
We had no qualm about partaking the soothing lemonade in their houses during the many festivals that they had. We were not bothered by the suckling pigs they ate – not even the poor creatures’ heads that they displayed on the dinner tables.
We called each other names. The Melayu were the belacan eaters, the Chinese the pork-eaters and the Indians the toddy-drinkers. Today you try that you may end up in a hospital or a police station.
Ah, those were the days my friend when we were truly colour blind and truly Malayans and Malaysians. I was lucky. I spent five years in a Sekolah Melayu, two years transiting from Malay to English in the Special Malay Class and the following seven in English medium schools.
Today, some Malaysians are either so racist or lacking self confidence that they even reject the Sekolah Wawasan concept where national and national-type schools are located in the same compound with the pupils of various races sharing common facilities.
Sadly, we become even more divisive when we debate what the Prime Minister means by 1Malaysia and what we want out of it. Has the PM awoken the monster in us by invoking 1Malaysia? Wallahualam. Only God knows.

Salam Datuk,
"Sadly, we become even more divisive when we debate what the Prime Minister means by 1Malaysia and what we want out of it. Has the PM awoken the monster in us by invoking 1Malaysia? Wallahualam. Only God knows."
apparently, good intentions don't always yield good results. Does the problem lie in how we carry out those intentions or how we react to them?
Sounds like your English education saved you.Just as the English education me. I grew up colour blind just like you with Malays for neighbours, school mates and play ground friends. My mum could just dump me there to be taken care of when she needed to go to the shops or out on any emergency. No worries about anything like Islamic indoctrination or masuk Melayu. But now? It was nice during Christmas time my dad's Malay colleagues cleaning out their whiskey and brandy glasses and partaking in the chicken and mutton varuvals. No one asked if it was Halal. In those days my grand dad used to kill the chicken. Certainly not the Halal way. But then who ever knew about Halal and Haram in those days anyway?
Assalamualaikum Datuk Kadiq,
Entahlah siapa his adiviser or his speach writer who stress on the particular term : CINA IS NT PENDATANG.Ia tidak sepatutnya disentuh oleh PM. Tapi demi...demi...demi MENAGIH SOKONGAN. Saya ulang MENAGIH. Apakah UMNO sekarang terdesak sangat untuk mendapatkan perhatian daripada orang-orang seperti Soi Lek, Ka Siong?.
Tat kala hati kita diguris tiada pula NADA pujukan sebegitu. Habis2 gambar minum teh sesama penghuni rumah pangsa jea.
Datuk, Pola permainan politik sebegini amat merbahaya dimana tumpuan hanya kepada sebelah. Akhrnya kumpulan majoriti yg terpaksa membuat asimilaso kpd kumpulan majoriti.
Amat mendukacitakan...TERIMA KASIHLAH PM.
Obviously Najib himself do not know what is 'Melayu'? Transmigration of Malays within the Malay archipelago was a normal practice during the olden era before the introduction of the concept of political boundaries. Political boundaries was a concept introduced by the colonial masters onto the Malay archipelago which divided the archipelago into British,Dutch and Spanish colonies. Only Siam was not colonised by western powers but instead they colonised the Malay kingdom of Pattani in the present day southern Thailand. But for all intent and purpose, the occupants of the Malay archipelago are all Malay. Thus, Malays are not considered pendatangs when they move about within the Malay archipelago. Najib, you need to buck up on your Malay history.
As rightly mentioned by DAKJ, the issue is not about pendatang but rather about why some Chinese and Indian Malaysian's refusal to accept the Federal Constitution's articles 152 and 153.
Article 152 is about the status of Bahasa Melayu as the official language of the federation and Article 153 is about the special priveleges of the Bumiputeras.
After 53 years of independence, there are still Malaysia citizens who cannot converse in bahasa Melayu fluently when a Bangladeshi can speak reasonably fluent bahasa Melayu within six months.
There are also people who tried to mislead the public into believing that the setting up vernacular schools are protected under the Constitution. This is utter rubbish. Article 152 besides mentioning bahasa Melayu as the official language of the federation , it also guarantees the freedom of learning and using of other languages. BUT IT DID NOT CONSTITUTE THE PROVISION OF CHINESE AND INDIAN LANGUAGES AS A MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION.
Article 153 has been accepted by the pendatangs, that is, the forefathers of the present Chinese and Indian Malaysians. Article 153 do not only bind the pendatangs then but also their descendants as citizens of Malaysia. So, no one should question Article 153 anymore.
These are what's is all about . Its not about the Chinese and Indian Malaysian's citizenship or loyalty.

Kepada Presdien MCA...buruk2 clinton pun dia step down...maka jadilah wira bangsa mca utk tagih sokongan.
Mcm juga Ketua pemuda mca yg satu ketika menangis sebab masalah dipecat dari CC MCA tapi nak tunjuk "wira bangsa" maka berkokoklah beliau..
We need to instill more 'jatidiri' to our pembesar. Remind them on survival. Remind them to be patriotic not apologetic. Be wise. Be real wise.
BTW, 'First Lady Summit'- what is this for? Apa kejadahnya ni?
Dato',
IMHO, the diverse Malaysians could be well united in national schools.
My concern remains that those who argue sending children to national schools will destroy their respective native languages actually don't give a hoot to the racial integration in Malaysia. Why are they strongly opposed to the good of having all Malaysian kids get their education in the same school? Are they afraid their kids will know the true history of Malaysia, thus realising the Malays deserve their special positions and privileges?
My equally great concern now is the rapidly growing number of quarters canvassing for the equal rights for everybody, meaning to say the Malay special positions and privileges must be repealed.
This goes back all the way to the time in history. Now, if some say Malays too are pendatang in the Malay archipelago, then we have to really mark the time when the first Malay came to this area. When was that? If we must travel back to the past so as to corroborate the argument that the Malays too are pendatang, then same formula is applicable to, say, Chinamen and Indiamen.
Were they really the first to reside in their respective countries? Using the above formula, they too are pendatang in their own countries, thus establishing the fact that no one in this world since time immemorial could claim himself as not pendatang, except for the first man who set foot on earth himself, Nabi Adam a.s. that is. Should the formula be strictly applied, then he too was a pendatang since he descended from heaven.
The easiest formula to establish who are the penduduk asal in a country who deserves special positions and privileges thereof is whether they are the first to set foot on the land in question AND started a civilisation there. The first limb of this formula is not enough due to the fact that many could claim they had set their feet on the land they believe they have interest. The second limb enables us to identify the right persons/group of people as civilisations are built by people of certain ethnicity who are easily identifiable.
As regards Kepulauan Melayu, and true to its name which was given thousands of years ago, it was the Malays who first set foot in this region AND fulfilled the second limb, i.e. started the Malay civilisation which spanned across centuries.
Again, why is it so difficult for some to accept the notion of one school where everyone can get their education since childhood irrespective of race and religion?
Dear Doctor,
I was at the playground watching my 2 year old kid play with some chinese kids. Every now and then my "well meaning" 7 year old neighbour's daughter would carry my boy away from the chinese kids. After awhile I asked her why would she do that. She told me innocently but in a most sinister way "dia main dengan budak cina".
What's wrong with us!
Salam Dato'
I think now you know that who is Mr crazy for power!

Salam,
Good article! 1Malaysia is much needed to awaken the National conscience - muhasabah nasional dapat di lakukan.
Atas sebab itulah dia kata China bukan pendatang.
Metang metang anak keturunan bugis enggan mengaku berbangsa Melayu.
You were "1Malaysia" long before Najib's slogan, you say Kadir? LOL- That's really "RICH"!!
May I ask what you did to perpetuate that "1Malaysia" you were part of?
Weren't you part of the system that nurtured the current situation? Or were you asleep while all the damage was and rot was setting in?
Kadir- just take a look at the comments ....
Remember that you were part of those who created the monsters you condemn today ...
"Sadly, we become even more divisive when we debate what the Prime Minister means by 1Malaysia and what we want out of it."
My Dear KJ - Wake up!! It isn't that we have "become more divisive"- it is just that you have just opened your eyes to what has been happening over the last 30yrs!!
Dear Sir - it is nothing more than the corruption which has been so deeply entrenched in the fabric of society and the jearts & souls of Malaysians(directly or indirectly) as a result of Mahathirism in Umno, that has brought about this "divisiveness" you speak of.
Economic, Linguistic, Racial and religious issues that have hit the headlines are simply the manifestations of the corruption perpetrated by a ruling elite- and you know I'm right, even if you do not admit it.
Thank you.
All the races have different views about One Malaysia concept. Personally,as a layman I feel the concept is very simple to understand and yet political leaders and some bloggers try to manipulate the concept to serve their political interest to the extent that the people are quarelling among each other. The Malays particularly feel threatened as if Najib has sacrificed some of the the Malay rights by "liberalizing" the Dasar Ekonomi Baru. But I don't think being the President of UMNO and as Prime Minister, Najib is stupid enough to act in such a manner that would cause his position in jeopardy. I am sure Najib has different approach in moving forward to make everybody enjoys better living standard.
Good piece Datuk. Sobriety prevails in your writing.
Just a note Datuk. The very term "Kepulauan Melayu" or "Dunia Melayu",never existed prior to first arrival of the colonialist. The term Melayu in old Malay simply translates to Melaka Kingdom, and not in anyway as Malay ethnic group. The earlier kingdom of Malayu (ceased in 14th century) simply refers to a state in Palembang (which subsequently accepted and prolonged by the founder of Malaka) Further, the term Malay never refers to an ethnic community, but only as language community.
It is the creation of Dutch and later English colonialist scholars. Until Raffles changed the name Sulatus Salatin to "Sejarah Melayu",no historical Malay genealogy existed. He mirrored his English nation on the Malay.
What predates is the term NUSANTARA. And that simply refers to the dominance of Javanese over the rest of the archipelago. That's history.
SALAM KASIH DAN SAYANG
Datuk AKJ
Izinkan,
Sdr. WhackdeBugger has put in simple terms who the Malays are..
for all intent and purpose, the occupants of the Malay archipelago are all Malay. Thus, Malays are not considered pendatangs when they move about within the Malay archipelago.
As rightly mentioned by DAKJ, the issue is not about pendatang but rather about why some Chinese and Indian Malaysian's refusal to accept the Federal Constitution's articles 152 and 153.
Sdr. WhackdeBugger,
Perhaps, those ungrateful 'keturunan pendatang' now feel that they are in a strong position to 'conquer' this 'tanah pusaka melayu' especially when the Malays appeared weak and divided!
MELAYU KENA SEDAR DAN BERWASPADA!
Negaraku tanah tumpahnya darah ku
Rakyat hidup bersatu dan maju
Rahmat bahagia tuhan kurniakan
Raja kita selamat bertahta!
MELAYU TAK HILANG DIDUNIA BUKAN DENDANGAN TETAPI LANDASAN PERJUANGAN...SELAGI IA BERGELAR MELAYU!
ALFATIHAH, AMIN.
Ps. We don't want another article '135' printed in BLOOD in the papers!
Datuk Kadir,
Melayu Pendatang dan Cina dan India bukan pendatang?. This is the saddest episod in the history of Persekutuan Tanah Melayu.
Datuk, I salute you for your bravery.
DKJ!
Yup! You said it just the way it was!
I could call my friends - Ooi, Melayu, or Ooi China or Ooi , India - but never the elders - they were always uncle, aunty.
What happened DKJ!
Has our childhood memories been hijacked?
Were we so complacent, that we allowed these rascals to take away/obliterate some 40 years of solid foundations?
Do you believe that we can put to gather a network of persons from these times to hit back at these rascals?
I was looked after by a nanny from the day I was born who was a Malay/Muslim from Kedah - she was more of a grandmom - even my mum & dad would not cross here when it came to the kids!!
I await you.
Godspeed.
Kadir,
Orang Siam kampung hang tak bagitau hang kata depa dok Pendang beratus tahun sebelum mamak dari Kerala mai panggil depa pendatang dan dia jadi bumiputra.

You truly hit the mark when you said;
"Has the PM awoken the monster in us by invoking 1Malaysia?"
Contrary to Mista Blogga's statement of good intention in evoking the 1Malaysia slogan. The intention was to create "Bapa Perpaduan" title for Najib!
He should now rest with the Title of "Bapa Punca Perpecahan" instead.
Punca Perpecahan Dalam Negeri
Punca Perpecahan Dalam UMNO
Punca Perpecahan Bangsa Melayu?

I have already written opbout the Malayan Cinese rootsa of Opium Trade in my blog.
The Chinese had their version of Article 153,afirmative action to enrich the Capitalist Chinest to fight the British war against the Communist China.!!!
With that Malay now inherit the bogoise class that make up of 90% Chinese that exploits the Bumiputra Malays and native.
Malays have to Revolution against this modern form of Imperialism by the bogoise Chines and UMNO/BN.

Moning latuk,
"Pendatang" or not, lat's not impotent. What is more impotent is the altitude. If an individual is not pendatang but the altitudes more or less like the attitude of a pendatang, for the sake of telling the right thing, don't blame others for telling this guy as pendatang.
Padlock Home
DAKJ Salaam, the aristocratic son that you referred to, I believe, is not Najib although some commentators here think it is Najib. It was not the PM but his younger sibling banker Nizar who, at the recent Chinese Economic Congress of the MCA that I was a participant, said he had a strong opinion about how the NEP had been bastardised. He also told the mainly Chinese audience that he too was a descendant of an immigrant family.
He said he told writer Tan Siok Choo the daughter of Tun Tan Siew Sin and the grand-daughter of Tun Tan Cheng Lock that her family came to this country earlier than his family.
I can forgive Nizar for his ignorance of the Malay history and the geography of the Malay World if he is an ordinary Malaysian. Like his big brother Najib, he spent most of his growing up and schooling years in the UK detached from the Malay and Malaysian struggle of his illustrious father. Allahyarham Tun Abdul Razak was the pejuang Melayu and pejuang bangsa Malaysia. But Datuk, no all kuah akan tumpah ke nasi.
But it is sad when Nazir is not just another Malaysian but a powerful banker and adviser to his brother. What he says will be deem to represent or echo his brother’s thoughts. I think he is equal only to Datin Seri Roesmah in the level of influence on the PM. So he better choose his words carefully and deepen his knowledge about his own bangsa and history of the country.
Ex-banker
Debater Padlock Home, among other things, said:
""Pendatang" or not, lat's not impotent. What is more impotent is the altitude."
I hope it was a misspelling. It is important that we avoid being impotent.
Impotent is defines as: im·po·tent (im′pə tənt)
adjective
1. lacking physical strength; weak
2. ineffective, powerless, or helpless: impotent rage
3. unable to engage in sexual intercourse, esp. because of an inability to have or sustain an erection
4. Obsolete having no self-control.
I think whatever race we belong to, we must avoid impotency -- mati pucuk.
Thank you.
Tok Kadiaq,
The chinese at all times claimed being constantly victimised and oppresed by Pribumi.
A group that views itself as a threatened minority.Pendatang under siege.HA HA HA.
The funny part is,a PM who suffers siege mentality dance to the tune of these kiasu mentality group.
A leader of the majority bullied by the minority is a sorry sight.Come to think of it,this is no joke after all.DAMN.

To those racist commentors like Whackdebugger and co. , dudes .. the non-Malays have never question nor intend to challenge or abolish your 5-hak Bumi. We are not interested in that. You can hug these hak of yours till the day you die and hug them tight in your coffin , we dont care. The non-Malays and many progressive Malays are calling for meritocracy to bring this country forward politicalls, economically and socially. Massive corruptions and uncompetency are plaguing this country and meritocracy policy is the only cure ! Get the real issue right , dudes ... but I dont blame you if you cant understand the real issue here. "one aristocratic Melayu from the Bugis land in Sulawesi"
Something wrong in this statement. There is no such thing as a Melayu from Sulawesi cause there are no such thing as Melayu's in Sulawesi.
The people from Sulawesi who arrived in Tanah Melayu around the 1700's were called Orang Bugis, bukan Orang Melayu.
So the more apt statement would be something like: an aristocratic Malay with part Bugis blood/heritage from Sulawesi, or just plain, an aristocratic Malay, fullstop.
Saying Malay from Sulawesi is interestingly technically incorrect, unless we are referring to a Malay that migrated to Sulawesi then migrated back to Malaya.

Najib may thinks that it's safe to keep PLUS at EPF and not selling it to MMC or Asas Serba as widely speculated in the media. But that's also a show of his faith on Malay businessmen. If he doesn't have faith in these people, who have proven themselves reasonably well, what faith that he has on Malay business community? Please remember that these people were the first to come up with the proposals and they proposed to buy and not to get PLUS for free. I wonder what will be the response if the proposal comes from YTL or Genting!

im not sure to call Chinese pendatang or not.
most of them behave like pendatang.
so selfish, cant even speak proper national language, dont mix with other ppl from different race, some even speak mandarin in btw Malay and Indian friends (it happens to me at workplace in KL).
so, im really not sure whether not to call them pendatang.

Dato',
Transmigrations are people of Penang now living in Kuala Lumpur, people of Kelantan now living in Bandar Baru Bangi, people of Perak now living in Kota Kinabalu. We did not recognise them as migrations because they depart within the same boundary. Prior to colonisation, there was no formal boundaries of Acheh, Melaka, Kelantan, Sulawesi (land of the Bugis), Tanah Datar, Riau, et cetera; all within the Malay Archipelago. Hence, moving from one location to another is not a migration. We did not require visa then. Why of a sudden, a Bugis descent says he is a pendatang? Is he?
The present Malaysian Chinese and Indians are also not pendatangs. Their ancestors might be, but not them. They are Malaysians. Why bringing the issue? When we say 'they are not pendatang' may cause the word 'not' to drop. People might misinterpret it to mean 'they are pendatang'.
In order to realise 1Malaysia, we must overcome the non-assimilation of Chinese and Indians into full-pledged Malaysians as quoted by Prof. Khoo Kay Kim. Not breaking them away from being Malaysians. Having one school system that teach Mandarin, Tamil and cultures of the Chinese and Indians will not deprive the non-Malays of their rights.
Pendatang or not is not the issue, and should not be raised. What is important is the assimilation of races into one nation without foregoing the right of the races.
Racial issue is fragile and sensitive; and could easily back-fire if not handled well. Definitely not recommended to be used for political gains.

Would you explain to the Malays here what sort of revisions intended in the CSL request on behalf of the non-Malays when he keep on calling for revision to the NEP?

Assalamualaikum,
Raja Abdul Rahman bin Raja Mohammad Dain,
Pencetus Strategik Vision,
Petaling Jaya.
Datuk,
The issues in this country are not that complex if people of different faith and race accepts and acknowledge the history of this country.
We should never allow Najib or anyone else to instill in us especially Malays the idea of LKY that Chinese came from China, Indians from India and MALAYS from JAVA ISLANDS,therefore all are migrants.
The Malays have themselves to blame for having Abdullah and Najib as their PM.
And I believe Najib is planning Hishamudin as his successor when he wants to retire later.
Politik UMNO politik keturunan mcm PAP dan DAP jugak, kebolihan tak diambil kira pun.
Fed-up
"Why are we so suddenly caught up in this pendatang issue to the point that one aristocratic Melayu from the Bugis land in Sulawesi even told his Chinese audience recently that he too was a pendatang? This poor soul clearly does not understand the Malay history and the geography of the Kepulauan Melayu – the Malay Archipelago."

Salam Dato'..
Again, we can see the lot of poor confused souls in the debate about races without understanding the different between the concept of ETHNIC and RACES as i frequently mention earlier.
MELAYU is a RACE, CHINESE is a RACE and INDIAN is a RACE..
Jawa, Minang, Banjar, Bugis, Acheh, Sulu ETHNIC belonging to Malay race.
Hui, Han, Kek, Mancu, Mongol etc is ethnic belonging to Chinese race..
Tamil, Malayalam, Telegu, Punjab etc is ethnic belonging to Indian race..
RACE share a common sets of social norms such as language, culture, ruler protocols and to the extend of religion & way of thinking..
Ethnic keeps their features of dialects, clothing, foods and local customs but subjugated to the race set of common norms..
Until they really understand this fundamental, better hold their tongue from talking nonsense..
Why choose to insult our very own intelligence and stoop so low like those idiot politicians..? what can be worst than a blind & deaf guide way by an idiot?

Komen:
Dato',
"I think whatever race we belong to, we must avoid impotency -- mati pucuk."
Lepas kecut kena tegur pasal keris dulu, entah apa lagilah selepas ini...Me·layu, Me·layu
Salam raja2u
Terima kasih kerana mengambil perhatian terhadap pandangan saya berkenaan.
Sebenarnya saya sangat berharap NGO2 Melayu kita seperti PERWARIS, PERKASA dan GABEM buat macam apa yang saya lakukan dengan universiti berkenaan iaitu buat kajian bersama menyelesaikan masalah orang Melayu secara profesional dan Islam -bukannya menyalak sana sini!
